Hi! We’re Adam and Devon from Los Angeles, CA!
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and considering our family. We admire your strength and courage in making this choice. This is something that we will always hold in our hearts with respect and gratitude.
If we are chosen, your child’s life will be filled with love and laughter. We are a loving, compassionate, and creative family. We are excited to be able to share with you a little about our lives, and hope that there is a connection.
We are a fun-loving couple who enjoy the arts, music, and travel. We met getting our master’s degrees at an art school here in Los Angeles. After two years of friendship we began dating and immediately knew that we wanted to spend our lives together. After a year of dating, on Halloween in 2008, Adam dressed as a fireman, proposed to Devon, dressed a caveman! One year later we were married at a ranch in the Santa Monica mountains beneath a beautiful willow tree with all of our friends and family around us.
We are truly best friends in love and life (best friends in love is engraved on our wedding bands!). We went to art school together, we have traveled the world together, we own and run a small business together, and now are building our family together.
We share our home and lives with two beautiful little rescue dogs, Conrad and Ramona. Conrad looks like a teddy bear and has the sweetest disposition. He loves to sleep in bed with us, snuggle on our laps during movies, and has a big personality for such a little guy. Ramona has a deep soul, and a nurturing personality. Ramona loves long walks and cuddling with Adam. They love to chase squirrels in our beautiful backyard and sunbathing by our pool. They are both great with kids, including babies.
Friends & Family:
We are fortunate to have Devon’s whole family in the Los Angeles region, and most of Adam’s family nearby in Northern California. Devon’s entire family lives less than a mile away from each other in the Calabasas area, and we’re able to spend time with them, especially our three nieces numerous times a month. We celebrate all birthdays and holidays together. Adam’s brother and wife live less than a few miles away from us. Adam’s brother, Andy, is a barber and cuts Adam’s hair every two weeks and also happens to be a musician who performs at Disneyland! Perfect for his nieces and nephews. Adam’s parents visit monthly from northern California and stay with us in our guest room. Adoption has a place in Adam’s family history as his Dad was adopted, as were two of his uncles. We both come from very close families and our relationships with them are incredibly important to us.
Friendship is also very important to us. Because Devon grew up in Los Angeles she has a close group of childhood friends whom get together on a regular basis. They have been friends since pre-school! We are very active in the LA arts community and most of our friends are fellow artists, performers, musicians, writers, and passionate creative individuals. We love to entertain and often have friends and their kids over for BBQ’s and to swim in the pool.
All of our family and friends know about our plans to adopt and are thrilled!
We live on a tree lined street in the beautiful neighborhood of Eagle Rock in Los Angeles, California. We moved to this area when we decided to start our family. Down the street is a music and dance school for children, an indoor playground, a neighborhood park, and numerous shops geared towards kids and young families. We live a short drive from a wonderful Children’s Museum and beautiful Griffith Park where we often take River for train rides in famous Travel Town!
We live in a 1932 Spanish style home with four bedrooms and a huge backyard with a garden and a pool. It is the quintessential LA home!
Because we live in sunny Los Angeles we spend a ton of time outdoors lounging in the yard, BBQ’ing, swimming, reading, playing with the dogs. There is a small detached back house which Devon uses as her art studio. The walls in our home are filled with artwork by our favorite artists that we admire and have worked with at our gallery. It is truly a creative environment.
We are both artists who exhibit nationally and internationally. Devon is a photographer and Adam is a painter. In 2014 we started a small business, and opened our own gallery showing and selling the work of other artists. We have a lot of flexibility in our schedules therefore we’re able to be at every doctor appointment, teacher conference, soccer game, etc. Being there for our children is our number one priority.
A few of Devon’s favorites:
TV show: Top Chef
Movies: Wizard of Oz and Back to the Future
Hobbies: Yoga, cooking, traveling
A few of Adam’s favorites:
TV Show: Simpsons
Hobbies: Reading comics, watching movies, playing records
Movies: Godzilla, Alien
A few of River’s favorites:
Book: Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss
Hobbies: Going on long walks with the dogs, playing at My Gym, going on the swings at the park
Food: blueberries and peanut butter sandwiches
Our son River was born in 2015 and has his own unique and beautiful birth story. After finding out that we couldn’t conceive naturally we explored the many different paths to starting a family. River was brought into the world thanks to an amazing woman who donated her eggs so that we could begin our family.
River is playful and kind. He has a great smile, and you can already see his sense of humor developing as he is constantly laughing. He makes us laugh all the time too and will be an amazing big brother! He loves to play with other kids and loves animals, especially Conrad and Ramona.
We always knew we wanted to adopt, we talked about it before we struggled with our own infertility. We believe that this is a beautiful way to expand our family.
Our thoughts on parenting:
Love and kindness are the foundation for our family. Our children will always feel loved, safe, and secure. We think that providing a stable, loving environment and constant support are vital for our children’s self worth and confidence. Education is very important to us and we are fortunate to be able to provide the best education for our children. We absolutely love being parents, it is our greatest joy. We know that each child will have a different birth story, but each child will know first and foremost that they are loved. It is important to us that our child knows their birth story and how special they are because of it.
Our outlook on life:
Compassion and empathy are two of our guiding principles in life. Adam spent 5 years working at a non profit dedicated to animal welfare and volunteered with the Big Brothers Association mentoring kids. After college, Adam worked at a non profit after school program dedicated to children with developmental disabilities. Devon has worked in arts education for children at numerous non profits and county museums. We believe that volunteering is an important part of life and something we are looking forward to sharing with our children.
We both love exploring new places and cultures. We have made travel a priority in our marriage and want to continue exploring the world with our children. We have spent time volunteering at an Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand and have taught at a school in a local Thai village. We have climbed Machu Picchu, zip lined through the rainforests of Costa Rica and we have watched monkeys play on the sides of ancient temples in Cambodia. We have back packed through Europe and made friends along the way. It has always been a dream of ours to bring our children on these adventures to have a greater understanding of the world and their place in it.
