Donna and Rob

We are Rob & Donna, a fun-loving couple who adores kids! Our hearts and home are filled with so much love and we can’t wait to share it with another little one! Any child in our home will be loved, supported and given every opportunity for success. We imagine a fun childhood for our kids – celebrating every holiday with decorations and fun traditions. Learning to ride a bike, learning to swim. Taking road trips all over the country. Spending time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Our kids will always know they are loved and we’ll teach them to give the same love and kindness to others.

We each feel so blessed to have found a true companion who loves us through good and bad, and who shares so many common interests. We both have a passion for learning new things. We love visiting museums, historical sites and national parks. We love watching sports together and cheering on our favorite teams. Probably our favorite pastime of all is travelling –  especially road-tripping across the U.S.A. Since first meeting in spring 2009, we’ve visited 37 states together! We even keep track of which COUNTIES we visit. Chances are we’ve been to one near you!

In March 2014 we were SO thrilled and blessed to adopt our son Ethan. He is the absolute joy of our lives. Being able to give him new experiences like going to gymnastics class, the pool, the park, the zoo or the beach is so much fun. At the end of each day we smile and laugh together about the funny things he said or did and the new things he is learning. Ethan is very much a “people person” – he loves to meet new friends and to play with other kids. We know he will be a sweet and loving big brother!

Donna is the most caring and thoughtful person I know. She loves being around friends and family and is a great balance for my more reserved self. She has been known to sing and dance around when a song she likes is playing. I love that I can be goofy with her. Donna is great at crafts. She makes great handmade birthday cards and she hand-painted the letters for the wall in Ethan’s room. When she gets excited about a project, she works like crazy until it’s done. Donna has a heart for understanding and caring about other people. She is quick to lend a hand when a friend is in need, often rearranging her plans so she can be present to help. Donna is a pediatric nurse at a Children’s Hospital. She takes care of kids of all ages after surgery or trauma. She considers herself lucky that she gets to spend each work day with children and she works hard to give them the best care. She says being a nurse was good training for being a mom. When we adopt again, Donna will take a break from being a nurse so she can be a full-time mom for a few years. She’s excited to put her full time and energy into being there for our kids.

Rob is patient, kind and loves being a dad. There’s no one I’d rather experience life with than him. I’m so lucky that I got to marry my best friend. He and always knows how to calm me down when I am worried or stressed. I always knew he would be an awesome Dad. Seeing the joy in his eyes when he is cuddling or playing with Ethan is simply the best. Rob is one of the most loyal people I know. He loves his close friends like family and would do anything for them. He is always there to pitch in when things need to be done and he takes great care of me and Ethan. Rob has played Ultimate Frisbee on the same team for over 10 years – now the team has enough kids on the sideline to have a junior team of future Frisbee players! Rob also loves trivia and he’s full of random facts. For many years, he’s had had the same job as a software engineer with a company that does work for the military. He enjoys using critical thinking and math skills to solve problems. We feel blessed that he has a job that provides very well for us. His schedule is super flexible – no travel, 40 hours a week and he sets his own hours. Taking care of and spending time with his family will always be a priority!

We both feel blessed to come from families that gave us wonderful childhood memories and continue to love and support us as adults. Many of our family members live nearby and are a huge part of our lives. One of the greatest joys after adopting Ethan was seeing how much he was loved by all our family and friends. We know our next child is in for a whole lot of love and attention! Donna’s parents are amazing with kids and take so much delight in being grandparents. They love taking Ethan to baseball games and on adventures to meet baby ducks around their lake. Donna’s sister is an adoring Aunt who loves her little nephew to pieces and is so excited to have a new baby nephew or niece to spoil too! We often travel with Donna’s family and they are a huge source of support, fun and new experiences.

We see Rob’s dad every Sunday at church and he also comes over at least a few times a month. Rob’s mom died in 2004, so we check in on his dad often and include him in holidays with Donna’s family. Rob’s youngest sister also lives nearby and has two kids right around Ethan’s age. He loves playing with his cousins and we’re excited to add another little one to the fun. Our other family members are scattered throughout the country, but that doesn’t stop us from seeing them a few times a year, since we love to travel!

Donna found out when she was seventeen that it would be dangerous for her to get pregnant because of a chronic illness. However, she still dreamed of being a mom and imagined one day creating a family through adoption. When Rob entered the picture we both knew we couldn’t imagine our future without the joy of raising kids, and adoption seemed like a natural choice. Donna’s illness is well managed and she is able to live a full, happy and normal life. Most people are shocked when they find out about her medical challenges because they know her to be so active and full of energy! If anything, these challenges have made her a more compassionate and loving person and inspired her to become a nurse! We hope to teach our children that, although we can never know for sure what life will bring our way, we can decide to face each challenge with faith, creativity and a positive attitude.

Washington, DC is a great place to live and to raise a family. We love being so close to so much history and to endless things to explore – museums, monuments, the zoo, Cherry Blossoms, cultural festivals. We own our spacious three-story townhouse in a new development on the outskirts of the city. Even though our neighborhood is in DC, it feels like the suburbs. Our street is quiet and the neighborhood kids often ride bikes or meet up at the playground. Our church is the one where we got married, where Rob grew up and where Rob’s Dad also attends. There are many activities for kids – picnics after church, Sunday school, a youth choir, egg hunts, Christmas Pageants. Ethan loves church (which was one of his first words!) and he has fun “helping” with the food pantry, shelter dinners and other activities. Our faith is an important part of who we are. We are constantly in awe of how endlessly we have been blessed by God’s love and grace. We hope to dedicate our lives to sharing that love and grace with others.
