Sheri and Suzana

Dear Birthmother,

Thank you for considering us in your thoughtful decision making process.  We imagine this may be a difficult time for you as you search for the best and most loving possibilities for your child and yourself.   Whatever your choice, we think the fact that you are being thoughtful about your and your child’s lives means you are a person with integrity and clear values.  If we were to adopt your child, it would be important to us to tell him or her about your loving decision.

We’ve been together for nine years and had a commitment ceremony 6 years ago.  It was important to us to commit to each other before our families, community and God.  Our relationship continues to grow and deepen.  This deepening has inspired a desire to give a child a home and to see our family grow.  We have a loving relationship with each other, our families and our friends and want to provide this for a child.

We both believe in the essential goodness of all people.  We think there are many challenges in learning to love, share and live with respect and acceptance of ourselves and others, and we strive to apply these ideas within our relationship and those with our families, friends, and community.  We also hope to instill these same values in our child.  We would provide a loving home and part of that would always include knowledge of your loving decision.

We have been preparing to engage in the adoption process for the past four years and have made personal and professional decisions based on our desire to adopt.  Suzana just completed her doctorate in physical therapy and is professionally established as a clinician and university professor. She has a great position in a local hospital that is 5 minutes from our home and enables her to make her own schedule.   Sheri is a clinical psychologist and decided to enter private practice in order to have a flexible schedule that would allow for being home with our child.  She will also reduce her hours so that either she or Suzana will be home to take care of our child.  We are both healthy and value self care.

We are financially secure and have a spacious house with plenty of room for our family to grow.  We live in a lovely and safe residential community with tree lined streets and good schools. Our community is one of single family homes so children are a high priority here.  We have a community center that is a fun gathering place for parents and their children as it sponsors many sports, activities, and events for children.  It has playing fields, basketball courts, a pool, and buildings that hold art classes and lectures.  Sheri grew up here, rode her bike to school and played soccer, softball and swam with the swim team.

We met when Sheri was doing her post doctoral residency at the same place Suzana worked.  We were drawn to each other as colleagues because we admired each others professionalism and commitment to patients.  As we got to know each other, we realized we also shared many other values such as the essential worth of all people, respect, honesty and very importantly the idea that we are all on our own unique spiritual path.  We discovered we also shared the love of learning and insatiable curiosity about the world and its people.  Our commitment ceremony was held at a local church and the reception was at Sheri’s beloved grandmother’s house.

Now, who are we as individuals?  Suzana is the oldest of four children and is a citizen of both Brazil and the US.  She loves her work, particularly being able to work with mentally and physically disabled children, their families and the frail elderly. She loves mentoring and teaching students as well.   Suzana is an energetic, athletic, and vibrant person with a passion for life and helping others.  Her interests include reading, sports, hiking, and traveling and of course she loves to study.   She is active in her spiritual community and helping others has been part of life since she was a child.  She is often called upon to give lectures and facilitate study groups regarding spiritual growth.  Suzana is very close with her family who live in Brazil. She often travels to visit them and they come to the US.  Suzana’s family and large extended family could not be happier about welcoming a child into their family.  Suzana has always found children to be a source of joy as she has taken care of and spent time with many cousins, children of friends and child patients.

Sheri is an only child and was raised in South Florida. She too loves her work which primarily involves providing psychotherapy to people who want to address problems with themselves or in their lives.  She continues to learn about human psychology as she enjoys and values helping people to grow and deepen their understanding of themselves. Many of her clients have been through traumatic experiences in childhood and Sheri is often inspired by the spirit of human resilience she witnesses. Sheri finds pleasure in reading, being physically active, and engaging in thought provoking experiences like good movies, plays, and cultural events.  She finds spirited conversation about social and political issues to be fun and interesting and always wants to learn more about another person’s point of view.  Sheri’s father is overjoyed about becoming a grandfather for the first time.  Being a lifelong teacher and a baseball coach, he can’t wait to be a part of his grandchild’s life.  Sheri has always enjoyed being a part of her friend’s children’s lives and the whole gang looks forward to welcoming our child to the neighborhood.  Sheri has helped many parents, who have been her clients, in their parenting struggles.

Thank you for considering us in your decision making process.  We know you will make choices that fit you and your child.
