Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Lisa and Hugh

Dear Birthmother,

Your willingness to reach out to AdoptHelp to assist you in placing your baby is very courageous. We want to take this opportunity to thank you and to introduce ourselves. We are Hugh and Lisa, and we would be deeply honored if you would consider us as adoptive parents for your child.

We have been trying to start a family for years. Our close friends adopted a baby in October 2007. The love and happiness that resulted from that miracle defies description. That child really found the right home, and through the bravery of his birth mother, an incredible family has been formed. The beauty of that adoption has led us to seek adoption as the way to create the family of our dreams. We hope that something in our letter will inspire you to choose us to love and care for your child. We would be so appreciative for this amazing gift and would be forever grateful to you for possessing the courage to make it possible.

Hugh and Lisa met and fell in love in classic Hollywood fashion. We were tour guides at Universal Studios. We spent the summer days riding in a tram and talking about King Kong and the evenings falling hopelessly, endlessly and passionately in love with each other. We learned so much that summer, one important lesson being that life has a way of putting us where we need to be when we need to be there. That is how a boy from Phoenix met a girl from Los Angeles and fell in love.

Hugh grew up in Phoenix, where the blank canvas of the desert encouraged his creativity to blossom. Under the watchful eyes of his mentors, Dad and Grandpa, Hugh was encouraged to explore all areas of science, photography and aviation, areas that still interest him today. Hugh works in digital photography, blending his father’s medical background of plastic surgery with modern technology, and his deep love of photography.

Now that the business is a success, we are in a good position to start a family. Hugh will continue to work while Lisa is a stay-at-home mom. We both worked really hard over the years to get to a place financially and emotionally that we could make our lives all about our kids and our family. Our child is in for a very fun ride.

Our Family
Hugh’s parents made sure that he and his brothers traveled the world to learn about other cultures firsthand. They felt it was important to teach their children tolerance and acceptance of people who were different from themselves. Hugh’s parents and brothers are very supportive of our decision to adopt. Hugh’s younger brother has three young children. Our new addition would be welcomed with open arms.

Lisa’s family also is bursting with the excitement of adding a new member to the house. Lisa grew up in a very large, fun-loving Hawaiian family. Her mother is the youngest of fourteen children. She has fifty-three first cousins. Kids are definitely celebrated in this family! The family is waiting for the day when Lisa and Hugh bring over a new baby for them to love and to spoil.

Lisa also has an older brother and sister whose children call her their other mother. Although she grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and graduated from college locally, the majority of her family still lives in Hawaii. With over 700 at the family reunions, your child is assured of having many cousins and playmates who have been eagerly waiting for his or her arrival and cannot wait to share with them the true spirit of aloha!

Lisa’s Thoughts on Hugh
Hugh’s upbringing developed his open mind, and he saw our differences as something to embrace and learn and grow from. I have never before or since met a man so secure in who he is that nothing on the outside threatens or intimidates him. He sees each new person as an opportunity to learn something new. Each time he shakes someone’s hand, I can see the light in his eyes glimmer with anticipation of the fun of a new experience. It is the greatest thing to watch and helps keep me so engaged, even after all these years. I have followed his lead, and it has opened up the world to me. I walk through life now with an open heart. It is truly a remarkable gift.

Hugh's Thoughts on Lisa
Lisa’s love of family and surrounding herself with family and friends is exactly what I was always searching for in a partner. She makes everyone around her feel special and has a unique way of nurturing others that I know will help a child excel in life. She continues to foster lifelong friendships with her grade school friends, and amazes me when she introduces me to her new friends - people she meets that consider her family almost immediately. Everyone gravitates to her - especially children. They feel safe around her and open up in a way that even their own parents wonder what magic she possesses. I know what it is - it’s the magic that only comes when you truly accept someone for who they are.

Our Home
Our neighborhood is filled with families. Every year our street has a block party with a two-story water slide, bouncy house and beanbag toss competition. The fire department brings a truck by for the kids to climb on and explore. Throughout the year we host barbeque parties (complete with treasure hunts) for family and friends. Hugh’s hobby is ice cream making, so we are very popular! In the summertime, we grow our own vegetables, which we use to cook and share with our loved ones. Living in Los Angeles affords us the ability to live a fun and active life, with lots of local parks, great schools and the beautiful Southern California beaches just minutes away.

Hugh and I have created a warm and loving home together, and we are really excited to have a child with which to share it. We got close once, but God decided that our little girl needed to be with him instead. That just strengthened our resolve to create a family of our own, somehow, someway.

We know in our hearts that we are meant to be parents. We got a taste of it once and we cannot wait to get back there again. We are now searching for the right path to bring us to our baby, and we place our faith that once again, life will put us where we need to be when we need to be there.

Since we fell in love, we have challenged each other and encouraged each other to reach for our dreams. We encourage you to do the same. Going through this process, we discovered that birth parents and adoptive parents share one goal: Securing the best home and life for that child. You have a very important and incredibly challenging decision ahead of you. We wish for you that whatever resolution you choose, that you have the peace and comfort in knowing that it is the right one for you and your baby.

It is not that we are suggesting that we are perfect, because we are not. However, we are perfect for each other, and our love is the anchor of our lives. Although our backgrounds are different, Hugh and I chose to embrace our differences and expand and learn and grow in each other’s love and the love of those we cherish. Tolerance, acceptance and unconditional love are the gifts we received from our families, and the lessons we will pass on to our children. Unconditional love has woven itself through our lives apart and together and keeps us bonded to this day. Our families taught it, lived it, and gave it to us to share and show the world. There is no greater gift to give a child, and both Hugh and I are so appreciative and grateful for that invaluable legacy.

Who would have thought a summer job spent on the Universal Studios backlot with King Kong and his banana breath would have such life altering consequences? But life has a way of unfolding in unexpected ways. It does not always turn out like we plan, but sometimes plans are meant to change and put us on a different path than we initially imagined. The destination is not important. It is about making the most of the journey together. That is everything.

Good luck on your courageous journey...

With fond admiration - Lisa and Hugh
