Choose A Family : Parent Profile
Emily and Rachel
Dear Birth Mother,
Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about us. We’re Emily and Rachel and we are truly honored that you are considering us as adoptive parents for your child. We can only imagine what a difficult time this is for you and we want you to know that we admire your courage and strength in choosing adoption. Thank you for making this wonderful decision. It is an honor to introduce ourselves to you.
Emily and Rachel
We’ve been together for nearly ten years, and three years ago we had a big wedding with our friends and family. We live on a nice, quiet street in a 3 bedroom house in a peaceful part of Oakland, CA; many of our neighbors have little kids and babies and there’s a real community spirit here with block parties, gardening projects, and lots of hanging out on the sidewalk chit-chatting. We’ve been working towards building a family for four years and can’t wait to become parents.
Our work lives are really flexible – we’re both psychologists -- and because we’re each self-employed we set our own schedules and can each be home part-time with the baby. We are also both very fortunate in that our work lets us earn a good living, so we are very financially stable. Being therapists helps us have a relationship built on listening, understanding, and compassion. We know each other really well and are very respectful of each other’s feelings. We imagine that as mothers we’ll both be able to be patient and sensitive to what a child needs, first as a little baby and then during the time he or she is growing up.
Our families are supportive and excited about our wish to be parents. We have a great group of friends, and many of them have kids and are hoping that soon we’ll be lucky and have one of our own!
Emily describes Rachel…
Rachel is from England and one of the first things I loved about her was her beautiful accent. She is really smart, and very funny and she loves to get me laughing. She’ll do funny accents and hilarious little comedy routines from tv shows she grew up watching in London. Rachel is always interested in getting out there and doing new things – she’s learning how to play bass guitar and has a passion for going to hear live music. Rachel loves to sing, has been in lots of different musical groups, and often sings little songs around the house. A bit of an adventurer, Rachel got us great bikes and on the weekends we often go for long rides with friends. Rachel loves to travel – we’ve had a lot of fun on trips to New York, Hawaii, England, France, and the Caribbean together. She’s a really stable person – she’s got a great head on her shoulders and is solid and trustworthy, not to mention super at making plans and keeping all the details of daily life going smoothly. I think Rachel will make an excellent Mom – she is very loving and affectionate. It is really sweet watching her with our friends’ kids, singing lullabies to the babies, and teaching the older ones how to play different musical instruments.
Rachel writes about Emily…
One of the first things I loved about Emily was her playful, happy spirit. When we were first going out she’d always get me dancing with her in the kitchen while listening to groovy music. She gets very excited about life and has a lot of love to give. A really caring and nurturing woman, Emily is a great listener and a wonderful friend. She is extremely reliable, trustworthy and loyal and it didn’t take me long to realize I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Emily loves spending time outside -- going on long walks in our neighborhood and proudly tending to the different plants and flowers in our garden. I can imagine her finding really playful and inventive ways to teach a child about the world and I’m sure she’ll bring out any child’s natural curiosity! Emily is really passionate about learning and wants to offer a child a good education and whatever interesting opportunities life has to offer. On trips to Hawaii and the Caribbean, Emily loves to go snorkeling and can spend hours swimming around checking out the giant sea turtles and all the beautiful fish below. I joke with her that maybe in another life she actually was a sea turtle, as she moves with a lot of grace and is such a great dancer.
Our Promise To You
More than anything, we want to create a loving and safe home in which a child can grow up feeling good about who she or he is, surrounded by loving mothers and a network of extended family and good friends. Both of us were very fortunate to have been raised by parents who gave us lots of time and attention. We are very excited about the prospect of bringing a baby into our home and raising a child together, and can’t imagine anything else in life giving us more pleasure and happiness. We promise to be devoted parents, giving a child lots of love, loads of playmates, and the opportunity for an exceptionally good education. Because we’re psychologists, we understand what kids need at different ages and we will always do our best to sensitively meet these needs.
