Josh and Prudence
Dear Birthmother,
Our names are Josh and Prudence. We feel truly blessed that you are taking the time to learn about our family, and we hope that something about our story will touch your heart. We can only imagine the mix of emotions that you must be feeling at this time. We greatly admire the courage and strength that you are showing in making the decision to seek out the perfect parents for your child. Your loving and selfless decision is a wonderful decision for your child, and it is a dream come true for us. We want you to know that we will love our child unconditionally and with all our hearts, and we will dedicate our lives to making sure that our child feels safe, protected, and loved. We believe that we would be fantastic parents and we hope that after reading this letter you will agree!
Our Story
We met in the fall of 1993 in our freshman year Greek Thought and Literature class at the University of Chicago. We became friends right away. Gradually, our friendship blossomed into something more and we began dating in 1995. After graduating from the University of Chicago, we moved out to Los Angeles, where Josh attended law school and Prudence attended nursing school. We were married in 2000, and have now been happily married for nearly 10 years!
We enjoy spending time with our family and friends, and pursuing our passion – travel. In our years together, we have travelled the world and had many unforgettable experiences. From exploring the Australian outback, to touring the capitals of Europe, to cruising the Amazon, to climbing the Great Wall of China, to relaxing on the beaches of Rio, Cancun, and Jamaica, we have created many lasting memories. We look forward to sharing our love of travel with our child and to creating many new memories for our family to cherish.
In August of this year, we moved into a brand new two-story, four-bedroom home in the foothills outside of Los Angeles. We moved to this area after living in Los Angeles for 12 years because we wanted to start a family. Our home is in a gated community, with easy access to many parks, hiking trails, and schools. The schools in our area are all rated very highly, which is one of the reasons we chose this location.
We share our home with two dogs – Columbo and Fiyero. Columbo (named after our favorite TV detective) is a four-year old apricot toy poodle. Fiyero (named after a character from the Broadway play Wicked) is a two-year old black and white toy poodle. We enjoy taking them for walks and on short vacations (their favorite is Big Bear, a mountain resort outside of Los Angeles). They bring a lot of joy to our lives, and we know they will bring a lot of joy to our child as well!
A Little More About Prudence
Prudence was born and spent her early years in a small town outside of Kingston, Jamaica. She is the youngest of ten children. From very early on, strong family and educational values were instilled in her. She often times recalls with fondness being taught arithmetic at a very young age by her brothers in their family’s basement.
She migrated to the United States when she was 9 years old and has since lived in the wonderful state of California. Her family is still close and has grown tremendously as she and her siblings have gotten married, her siblings have had children, and their children have had children of their own. She enjoys family get-togethers on weekends but especially on holidays and special occasions. Having a new baby to be a part of those celebrations would add a new level of excitement to those gatherings. She is devoted to her family and takes great pride in her nephews and nieces. They often spend a portion of their school vacation with their favorite Auntie every year.
Prudence excelled throughout her schooling and achieved her dream of becoming a nurse in 2001. She later returned to graduate school to receive her master’s degree and to become a certified family nurse practitioner. She currently works for a community health center where she serves a largely underserved, immigrant population. Her schedule allows her flexibility as she is able to choose her own hours and days to work. She plans to reduce her hours once a baby arrives so that she can fully devote her time to care for him/her. Prudence’s love of travel, family, theater, reading and caring for others will be happily shared with her new son or daughter and she can’t wait to be a mother!
A Little More About Josh
Josh was born and raised in a small town in Minnesota. He is the older of two boys; his brother Jeremy is 18 months younger. His parents were not able to provide Josh and Jeremy with everything that they wanted as kids, but they provided them with everything that they needed. They took them to church every Sunday and taught them the value of faith. They helped them with their homework and taught them the value of education. Most importantly, they showed them in a thousand different ways how much they loved them.
Josh has had a life-long love of athletics. From the time he was five years old, all the way through high school, he played football, hockey, and baseball. He continued to play baseball – his true love – all the way through college. While he has lived in Chicago and Los Angeles for the past 16 years, Josh is true to his Minnesota roots and avidly follows all of the Minnesota college and professional sports teams.
Josh moved to Chicago in 1993 to attend the University of Chicago. He graduated in 1997 with a major in history. That year, he moved to Los Angeles and began law school at UCLA. He graduated from law school in 2000, and began working at a large international law firm. He is now a partner in the litigation department of that firm, having been elevated from the ranks of the associates to partner last summer. He loves his job and the flexibility it gives him to set his own schedule, which will allow him plenty of time with our baby!
His family still lives in Minnesota, but he visits them regularly, and they return the favor by making frequent trips to Los Angeles (particularly during the cold winter months in Minnesota).
Our Hopes And Dreams
We both have large families, and family is second only to faith in its importance to our lives. With all of Prudence’s brothers and sisters, we have lots of nieces and nephews, and we enjoy spending time with them and having them stay with us on the weekends and during the summer. However, we now want to move from “Uncle Josh” and “Auntie Prudence” to mom and dad, and we believe that God’s plan is for us to expand our family through adoption.
We treasure the thought of having a child of our own, and we will do everything in our power to make sure that our child has the love, education, opportunities, and life experience necessary to make his or her life full and rewarding. We also promise that our child will know that he or she had a wonderful birth mother who made a very courageous decision in order to provide him or her with the best possible life.
