Choose A Family : Parent Profile
Robert and Alyssa
Dear Birthmother,
If you’re looking for a couple who will love your baby, raise him/her to grow up healthy in mind, body, and soul plus be surrounded by people who are ready to love him/her unconditionally, then you are looking for us! We are Robert and Alyssa.
Although we have a lot of children in our lives, from our jobs to family and friends, what we long for most in life is to be parents and raise a child together. We have dedicated our lives to children from Robert teaching high school English to Alyssa being a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (that’s kind of like a doctor for children). We have always wanted children and feel like we are “standing still”; waiting for the next phase of parenthood for our lives to continue. After going through infertility treatments we are eager to become parents through the miracle of adoption. We cannot imagine the decision process you have gone through but want you to know we are here to support you in any way we can through this very difficulty but courageous decision.
Our first meeting wasn’t love at first sight, but after becoming acquainted and spending time together through mutual friends, we found we had a lot in common and shared similar future goals. We both dreamed of having a large family as well as having lots of pets. True, our upbringings were quite different; Alyssa grew up in New York and moved to California at age 12. She grew up taking tap dancing (loved the noise), horseback riding (would never kick the horse hard enough to make him go), girl scouts (loved the cookies) and camping. Robert was raised mostly in southern California surfing, skateboarding, fishing, camping and once he was an honorary batboy for the California Angels. Our relationship grew stronger over time the more we learned about each other. Family is important to both of us; so is respect for self and others. Recently, we joined the Mountain Joy Bible Fellowship; a local Christian based- nondenominational church. We absolutely love it. It is down the street from us and we are able to walk there. This August we were baptized! Alyssa is on the “kids corner” committee for the annual Fall Bazaar.
We both love the outdoors. Even our wedding was outside under the summer sky. Camping is one of the things we both love to do together. When we first met, we would go backpacking. We went all over northern California and even to Montana. Now, we car camp in style! We even have a camping kitchen sink! This past year we went to the Humbolt-Redwoods State Park and Hendy Woods State Park; talk about big trees! During camping we fish, hike, swim, and play a game called washers. We have at least 2 trips a summer, which started out as 4-day trips, and now we are up to a week! Another thing we both enjoy doing together is cooking. Although, Robert is more of the gourmet (he cooked at restaurants as he put himself through college). His best dish is Chicken Marsala; Alyssa is proud to hold the secret recipe for the best Cesar salad around. She could tell you the recipe but she’d have to kill you… (Just kidding, but seriously, only her best friend Janice knows the recipe; given to her on her wedding day with a sworn oath not to tell a soul!). Alyssa also loves to try out new recipes from “Cooking Light” weekly, but usually ends up adding the fat back in. Our other love is gardening. We have a huge fenced in garden (to keep the deer out) that already has four different types of tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant and cucumbers. Our other big love is music, with Eric Clapton being our favorite musician of all time; we even walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of “Wonderful Tonight”.
We just bought our home about 1-½ years ago and still everyday there is something more to love about it!! It truly is our dream home! It is a modest home on over 1-¾ acres in the small community of Forest Ranch in northern California. We love to be surrounded by the many pine trees, oak trees, manzanita trees and numerous wild flowers. Our house is already baby proofed with a gate to go around the wood burning stove and a rot-iron fence that surrounds the gorgeous deck off the back of the house. Our home is very peaceful and serene. Mountain views are abundant through every window. We feel like we live in our own little mountain get-a-way, but are only 15 minutes from Chico; a larger town with a university that offers a lot of cultural programs and events. Last year, we took our eldest niece to see the Nutcracker for the first time.
Our immediate family currently consists of us and our pets. Our huge English Mastiff, Maximus is the biggest baby. He has a long list of his fears from garbage cans to skateboards to hula-hoops. He is great with kids and extremely gentle. Cricket, the cat, was adopted from our old neighbor who moved away. On his first encounter with Max, he swatted Max with his paw. They have been best buds ever since. We will often find them curled up together on the couch or in bed. We also have two bunnies; one adopted from the pound; the other from a pet store. They live in style! A three room, two story “cage” and it is open to a “dog run” that they have full access to. Personally, we think we spoil them a bit.
Our extended families live in southern California and on the east coast. We don’t get to see them very often, about once a year to every other year, but through the wonders of computers, we email and exchange pictures often. One thing for certain is our family and friends are our biggest cheerleaders; encouraging us every step of the way through the adoption process. We are truly blessed with a very close circle of friends. What makes it even more special is Robert’s brother and family run in the same circle of friends, so we see them quite often. We have BBQ’s most weekends, rotating whose house it is at. We are fortunate to have the friends and family we have.
Thank you for taking the time to see a glimpse of our lives. Mainly, we want you to know that if you are considering us, you can be absolutely positively sure that your child will be given every opportunity to experience life to the fullest in a loving, stable and supportive family where he/she will be unconditionally loved and appreciated for the special and unique gifts that he/she will bring to the world. We will love your child when he/she when being good and when he/she is being bad. Robert will chase away the boys who are not good enough if it is a girl and Alyssa will warn against the flirty girls if it is a boy. You can be assured your child will be cherished each and every day of his/her life and that we will be truly honored to have your child join our family.
