Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Leslie & Nick

Dear Birth Parents,
Hi! We are Nick and Leslie; thanks for reading our profile and getting to know us. We can imagine the hopes, dreams, and love you feel for your child, because we feel those same feelings. We believe that being a parent is not about genetics, but about unconditional love, compassion, guidance, laughter, and encouragement. We always wanted to adopt a child, and when we couldn’t have biological children, adopting was an easy decision. We are very excited to start our family. We look forward to getting to know you and having a wonderful child who knows that he or she is so special that he or she is loved by not one, but two families – yours and ours!

How We Met – Indian Boy meets Midwestern Girl

Nick was born and raised in India, and Leslie grew up in the Chicago suburbs, where her family has lived for 4 generations. Who would have thought we would have met each other, half-way round the world from Chicago? We met while Leslie was an exchange student in India during her senior year in college. Nick was going to school in the same town, and we met at a party hosted by mutual friends. Nick asked Leslie to dance, and when the party was over, asked her out to lunch the following day. That first date kicked off a whirlwind romance in India – with mountain-top picnics, days at the beach, rides on Nick’s motorcycle through crowded streets, and nights looking up at the stars. Who could blame us for getting married 5 months later! That was 16 years ago, and our life together has been filled with love and laughter ever since. We have taken the best of Indian and American culture and blended the two to create a fun and unique life together.

About Our Life Together

We enjoy each other tremendously and any activity is more fun when we are doing it together. Our favorite activities include talking and laughing with each other, doing household projects, taking a short day trip to a scenic spot, going to movies, hiking, going to concerts, going to restaurants and trying new food, and traveling.

We used to live in the Chicago suburbs, but we moved to Phoenix 4 years ago so that Leslie could go to school full time. While we miss our friends and family in Chicago, we love the weather and beauty of Arizona.

A big part of our lives is our pets – we have two dogs and two cats. Our dogs, Fiddler and Jill, are retired racing greyhounds. They are very sweet and gentle dogs who love to nap in the sun and go on walks. Our cats, Smokey and Mia, are brother and sister from the same litter and you can tell! They look and act alike and are very cute and love to cuddle.

We enjoy travelling and taking pictures of our favorite places. One of our favorite places is California – we have taken trips to Palm Springs, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Yosemite National Park. We can’t resist the ocean and the mountains! A special trip we took with Leslie’s family was to Disney World, where we stayed at the Magic Kingdom and enjoyed Epcot Center and the Blizzard Beach Water Park the most. For our 10th wedding anniversary we went to Maui where we snorkeled, took a helicopter tour of the island, laid in the sun, and explored the out of the way spots of the island. Other trips include Door County Wisconsin, Niagara Falls, and Riviera Maya, Mexico. We can’t wait to bring our little one on our next trip.

Nick also enjoys hiking. Nick hiked to the top of the highest peak in Arizona – Humphreys Peak – at 12,500 feet elevation. Nick also enjoys taking short and long trips on his motorcycle. Nick also loves to work on projects around the house.

More About Nick (From Leslie): Nick and I have been together for so long, I can’t imagine my life without him. He is a very special person who makes friends easily and fits in where ever he goes. He genuinely cares about the people he loves. He is very tolerant of different viewpoints. He also loves to learn new things and he pushes himself to be the best he can be. I know that he wants our child to have the freedom and support to develop his or her own talents to the fullest. Finally, he is very funny and keeps me laughing!

About Leslie

Leslie has a few months before she graduates from medical school. She will be a Naturopathic Doctor – a doctor that specializes in natural medicine. She cares deeply about other people and is passionate about helping people achieve their best health. When she graduates, she will take time off to raise the baby, and then have a small practice that allows her to set her own schedule and spend time with her family. In her free time, she likes to socialize with her friends, play with her dogs and cats, spend time with her mom, tend her vegetable garden, listen to music, read, play Nintendo Wii, and crochet.

More About Leslie (From Nick): My wife loves to laugh. She is quick witted and appreciates anyone who enjoys seeing the funny side of life. She is also very smart and I am proud of her and her desire to become a Naturopathic Doctor. Her compassion for people motivates her to help others achieve their best health and full potential. She loves to learn about a wide variety of things and always is in the middle of a good book. She is loyal to her friends, a good listener, and her family is very important to her. As a mom, she will be very loving, nurturing, supportive, and fun.

Our Home and Neighborhood

We live in a beautiful neighborhood in Phoenix. We love our home and have put a lot of work into it to make it our own. We have a 4 bedroom, single story house and a very large backyard. We are only two blocks from one of the largest city parks in the country. We go to the park almost daily to hike, mountain bike, walk our dogs, and enjoy the natural beauty. The schools in our area are considered the best schools in Phoenix. The neighborhood is a family-oriented neighborhood and the neighborhood school is two blocks away. We live close to the center of the neighborhood where there is a big swimming pool, little league fields, tennis courts, and a farmers market. We also have neighborhood 4th of July fireworks and special holiday events like a community haunted house, hay rides, and a visit from Santa every December. We truly believe we live in the best neighborhood in Phoenix.

Our Families

What has been wonderful about our marriage is that our Indian and American families have been joined together, too! Both Nick and Leslie’s family support the adoption 100% and are thrilled to welcome the newest member to the family.

Nick is the oldest of two – he has a younger sister who is married with 3 children. His parents have been married for 40 years and live half the year in India and half the year in America with Nick’s sister. While his immediate family is small, his extended family is large – he has 24 aunts and uncles and 27 cousins living in both America and India. Both of Nick’s parents are retired – Nick’s father was an engineer and Nick’s mother was an artist. We have many of her paintings displayed in our home!

Leslie is also the oldest of two – she has a younger sister who is married and eager to become an aunt! Her parents have been married for 41 years and are very excited to become first-time grandparents. Leslie’s father is an engineer and looking forward to retiring in a few years. Her mom was a stay at home mom, and she started working after Leslie and her sister were grown. She is counting down the days until she will be a grandmother!
