Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Nicole

Dear Birthmother,
First I would like to take the chance to tell you what a brave and courageous person you are. Giving up a child is a truly selfless and compassionate decision.

About Me & My Family

My name is Nicole and I was adopted when I was one month old. My adoptive parents are the most wonderful people in the world. They are the reason I am who I am today and why I have accomplished so much in my life. They have been happily married for almost 42 years now. My dad is an aerospace engineer and my mom is a high school English teacher. I guess you could say teaching runs in my family—my great grandmother was a teacher, my grandmother was a teacher, my mom is a teacher, I am a teacher, and my cousin will soon be a teacher.

I grew up in Southern California and have lived here most of my life. I lived in Alabama for five years while going to college and Washington, DC for two years to work on Capitol Hill and the Pentagon. I moved back to California to be near my parents and to become a teacher. I am an only child because my parents couldn’t have children and the wait list to adopt was five years. They had already waited five for me and didn’t have it in them to wait another five for another child. They gave me the most wonderful gift in the world by choosing to be my parents and I want to offer that to a child. I don’t know if I can have children or not—I have never tried. I feel like I have the most perfect life with tons of love and support from my family and friends and I want to give that to a child.

My family and I are very close. My parents live 5 minutes away in the same city. My aunt and uncle and one of my cousins live 30 minutes south of me, and my other cousin lives one hour north of me. We spend at least one weekend a month all together and I see my youngest cousin at least once a week for dinner and girl talk. The rest of my family lives in Georgia, and I spend at least two weeks there every summer and sometimes Christmas.

My friends and I are very laid back and relaxed. We usually spend the weekends going to the movies or hanging out and watching a DVD. One of my good friends has a four month old baby, Oliver, and we often take him for walks on the beach with my dog, Auburn. I rescued Auburn three years ago from a shelter—she is the runt of 12. She loves children and she would rather play with them and lick their faces than do almost anything. She is very gentle and loves to be fed treats—which she takes very gently out of children’s hands.

I have kept up several long-lasting friendships. The most important is my best friend, Kathleen. She and I are both only children, so she is like a big sister to me. We have known each other since the day my parents brought me home and she looked at me from the front window—chicken pox were going around so she wasn’t allowed to come in the house. She stayed in the window for quite some time, watching me. She always took care of me growing up and looked out for me. I also have several friends that I have known since I was 4 or 5. We played soccer together and went to school together. There are several of us who still get together every Wednesday for pizza—parents and kids, and now grandkids.

My Home

I live in a three bedroom home that I grew up in until I was nine. My parents moved to a bigger house with a pool because I am like a fish in water. I have a huge backyard where I plan to put a playhouse like my parents had while I was growing up. There is a large park at the end of my street with lots of grass and a safe playground. There is a large park and playground in my parents’ neighborhood as well. I also have great neighbors, including my best friend’s mom, who lives across the street.

I live in the greatest place. I am 20 minutes from the beach, 20 minutes from Disneyland and about an hour from the mountains and snow. I often go to Disneyland with my friends and family just to have dinner and walk around.

My house also has a big kitchen and dining room perfect for entertaining. I often have people over to show off my cooking skills. I make a great lasagna (and anything else Italian), and I am learning how to grill. However, my friends, family, and students would tell you I make the best sugar and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies in Southern California, which I often take to work for my co-workers and students to enjoy.

My Interests and Passions

I love traveling. I have been to Mexico, China, Belize, Guatemala, Peru, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and France. Not to mention 25 of the 50 states. While living in Alabama, I was able to take road trips to several places, including New Orleans, Disney World, and Boston. I have traveled with friends, with family, and by myself. I think it is important to see the world and to understand different cultures. While I was in Belize and Guatemala, I studied the Mayan culture. My mom went with me to Peru, and we spent two days at Macchu Picchu. I traveled around Great Britain with my parents and I am going to Italy with them in the summer. Everyone should see the world.

Another passion of mine is sports. I played soccer until I hurt my knee, and then I coached 6 and 7 year olds for several years. When I started teaching, I started coaching junior varsity girls’ soccer. I also like professional soccer and have tickets to the LA Galaxy. However, my favorite sport is a tie between college football and professional hockey.

I went to school at Auburn University, like my dad and my uncle. I grew up watching Auburn football, as well as other South Eastern Conference teams. We get together with Auburn Alumni every Saturday during football season to watch the games. We are like a family. My other uncle went to the University of Georgia, so we also watch football with his family. Every year there is a big picnic at the beach for all the South Eastern Conference fans that my whole family goes to—it is tradition.

I also love Los Angeles Kings hockey. My dad started taking me to games when I was 15, and I have been going ever since. My favorite player in Michael Cammalleri, and I got to meet him recently, and it was one of the most exciting events in my life.

It seems I am always doing something new to my home—whether it is filling a new hole dug by Auburn, or painting the kitchen. I love to decorate and change things around. Halloween is my favorite time of year and my house is always decorated. There is a city nearby that closes down the main street for a Halloween parade and I go almost every year. Last year I took my dog to the dog costume parade. She was very unhappily dressed as a pumpkin.

Enthusiasm doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about my job. It takes a special kind of person to teach any child and I get great joy out of my job. I communicate well with my students. I am the advisor for the junior class, I coach soccer, and I always have my door open to any student. I tend to go above and beyond in my job, but I think it is important for kids to know that someone cares about them.

Being a mom isn’t something I always thought I wanted to do. But my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and it made me realize how important family is to me and how much a child would complete my life. I am lucky enough to have a supportive family who will help me every step of the way in raising a child, as well as a job that allows me the flexibility to be home when I need to be. I am in a good financial place in my life—I own my own home and have the means to raise a child by myself. I am excited to be a mom and welcome a child into my home and my life with open arms.

Thank you for taking the time to consider me.
