Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Chris and Bob

Dear Birthmother -
Thank you for taking the time to read about us. Choosing adoption for your baby takes an incredible amount of courage and selflessness and for that we respect you tremendously.

We are Chris and Bob and we are so grateful that you would consider us to be your child’s dads; or as future big sister Cai calls us “daddy” and “baba.” We hope you enjoy reading our story and getting to know a little bit more about our truly “Modern Family.”

Our Modern Family –
We met in 1999 through mutual friends. However, it took Bob nearly a year to ask Chris out on a date. The year was well worth the wait. Exactly three years after that first date (June 21), we were married via a commitment ceremony in Maui. And, this past June we celebrated our tenth anniversary together.

Early in our relationship we realized we wanted a family. That dream came true in 2007 when we adopted our daughter, Cai, from Vietnam. Today our dream is to broaden our family. We both grew up with siblings (Bob has two sisters and Chris two brothers) and understand how wonderful it is for children to have siblings. Your child will have a big sister, who is beyond excited about that opportunity.

Bob (aka Baba) through Chris’ eyes…
Baba, in case you wondered, is Vietnamese for “daddy.” That’s what Cai calls Bob. And, I must say he is the best “baba” there is. Bob left his career of teaching high school biology when we adopted Cai to stay home with her and become “Mr. Mom.” He spent the past four years raising Cai and helping her grow into a smart, independent and kind little girl. Bob has a natural ability with kids. When Cai started preschool this year Bob returned to work as the assistant director of an inner-city charter school in Columbus. Again, Bob isn’t happy unless he is helping children to achieve their potential greatness. His new role affords him that opportunity.

Here are 5 things you should know about Bob…

  • He’s the most generous guy you’ll ever meet. Just ask his students, faculty, friends and family.
  • “Mr. Social” and is usually the life of the party.
  • Athletic (e.g. runs marathons and plays competitive tennis, but cannot throw a softball).
  • Can talk sports with the guys but also braid Cai’s hair!
  • He’s the best stay-at-home dad any kid could wish for.

Chris (aka daddy) through Bob’s eyes…
From the day that I met Chris, I knew there was something special about him. He is kind, generous, loyal and an incredible baker! He is an amazing daddy and my best friend. He always makes our family feel safe and secure. Chris has always excelled both socially and professionally. He has worked on advertising campaigns for Wendy’s, Campbell’s Soup and Miracle-Gro and currently works as a VP for a pharmaceutical advertising agency.

Here are 5 things you should know about Chris…

  • Chris is honest, loyal and sincere.
  • “Mr. Planner” - has an eye for detail and loves to plan events and parties.
  • Chris can play softball with the best of them and recently competed in the 2010 Gay World Series, but rarely beats Bob in a heated tennis match.
  • Chris loves to bake cookies and pies with Cai that rival even those of Martha Stewart (whose home he has actually been invited to for breakfast).
  • Chris is the love of my life and the best father any child could want.

Our Family –
There will be plenty of relatives to love your child as much as we do. Both of us were raised in small towns in Ohio and the majority of our families are still here. Bob has two sisters, Heather and Krista and three nieces and nephews. His parents and sisters all reside in Northeastern Ohio. Bob’s family is small but provides a huge amount of love and support for our family. Chris has two younger brothers, Kyle and Adam who both reside in Colorado. His parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins total 70+. They are all very supportive and have unconditional love for our family. You can only imagine how much fun Cai’s birthday parties are once you invite so many relatives, friends and classmates! Needless to say, there’s always a BIG birthday cake! Finally when you add in the unconditional love of two big yellow labs, we are truly a modern family!

Our Friends
We have wonderful friends that we consider an extension of our family. We love to entertain and our home is often filled with the sounds of cheering for the big game, laughing at each other’s jokes, a birthday celebration or a relaxing Sunday brunch.

Our cul-de-sac is filled with neighbors and children who are extremely supportive of one another. Each year we have a Halloween potluck, holiday decorating weekend, and numerous other activities that allow us to come together as neighbors.

Our Home -
We are fortunate to live in a beautiful home nestled in a wooded cul-de-sac in the family oriented city of Dublin, OH. We have a four bedroom home that allows us plenty of room to grow our family and a great yard where our child(ren) are able to run and play. Our neighborhood is safe, serene and filled with children of all ages. Our neighborhood sits on 642 acres including miles of biking and walking paths, 60 acres of parks and a golf course. We are within walking distance of a community pool and interactive water fountain. Dublin also boasts some of the finest schools in the state and nation.

Thank You –
We understand how this decision must be very difficult and we understand that you want the best for your child. We hope this brief glimpse into our lives has shared with you how important family is to us and that we are excellent, loving parents.

Your child will know that he/she is loved unconditionally, just as we were as children. We will dedicate our lives to ensuring your child grows up confident, happy, compassionate, fun loving, educated and most of all, always knowing about the love and sacrifice you made for him/her to come into our lives.

We appreciate the opportunity to share our story with you and we hope we get the opportunity to meet you.

To your child we promise…

  • …a lifetime of security and comfort
  • …to play, read, sing and dance with you each and every day
  • …to show you great places around the world
  • …to inspire you to be kind, compassionate, loving and respectful of others
  • …to celebrate the beautiful miracle you are

With our sincere gratitude,

A note from your child’s future big sister, Cai…
Cai has spent the last two years asking for a baby brother or sister. If you ask her why, her response is simply… “I want to love them and kiss them and help take care of my baby brother or sister.”
