Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Kate and Jess

Dear Birthmother

Hello! As you embark on the process of choosing a family for your child, please know we admire your courage and wish you the very best in your adoption journey. We are grateful you have taken the time to consider our family - and hope you get a sense of who we are - a loving and joyful couple who absolutely can’t wait to be parents.

We are so excited to be able to share a little piece of ourselves with you! Here are a few things we hope you remember about us:

  • We are a loving and joyful couple - we love to laugh and after ten years of being together are still very much in love;
  • We are blessed with a very close family - many of which who live nearby - and are so excited to welcome a new baby;
  • We love to have adventures - whether its traveling, skydiving, dancing or karaoke;
  • We absolutely love children - and are blessed with two wonderful god-children and an adorable nephew - we love spending time with them and can’t wait to be parents;
  • Education is extraordinarily important to us - and we are passionately committed to giving our child every possible educational opportunity.

About Us
Ten years ago - the stars aligned and we were introduced to each other by a dear mutual friend. Jess immediately caught Kate’s attention when he complimented her on her shoes - showing his good fashion sense. After a dinner date - we had a whirlwind romance.

Showing his incredible romantic side - Jess proposed to Kate at an old inn and then whisked her back home where he had planned a huge surprise engagement party with all their family and close friends.

Our wedding was a day of absolute and compete joy. We were married by a beautiful lake. The ceremony was intimate - and the reception was full of love and fun. The night ended with fireworks over the lake - with all our family and friends laying on the grass by the lake looking up, smiling and laughing.

Over the last ten years, we have built a wonderful life together. We are lucky to still be very much in love and can still make each other laugh with just a look.

We always knew we wanted to have children - whether through biology or adoption. When we found out we could not have children, we did not hesitate to start the adoption process.

We are so absolutely excited and thrilled at the idea of being parents - and have a team of family and friends who are just as excited as we are to have a new baby in our world!

Aboute Jess
Jess has a big presence wherever he is - everyone knows when he comes in the room - as his positive energy and boisterous laugh let everyone know he’s around.

He is passionate about a lot of things - and is also thoughtful, loving and very caring.

He is an incredibly open person - and will try anything at least once (excepts olives and modern dance).

Jess never loses his temper or raises his voice - and he is incredibly thoughtful about both his family and friends. Jess is the kind of person that always asks if he can get you something to eat or fill your water glass or run downstairs and get you an extra blanket. He makes me feel like a queen (even when I may not always deserve it!). He is the ultimate cheerleader - he comes to all my athletic and charity events and cheers louder and longer than anyone else in the crowd.

His passion and enthusiasm is infectious and I can’t wait to see him as a father.

I absolutely know he will do the most wonderful job - and will support our child in whatever they want to do - with lots of loud and passionate love.

About Kate
Kate is the most loving and most passionate woman that I’ve even known, these qualities that so drew me too her when I first met her.

I love her passion for supporting her friends and family, she is the person that I look to for thoughtfulness and perspective.

I love to pursue my dreams and Kate is the most supportive person in the world; she helps me up when I get down and she helps me see the challenges when I may not recognize them. One of the most amazing things about Kate is her ability to overcome any obstacle with such calm and beauty.

Kate loves art and she is a total foodie, she’s been to some of the best restaurants in the world and some of the smallest with the most fantastic little treats. She’s adventurous and willing to try new things on a moments notice. One of the things we share is a love of architecture and we’ve toured some of the most amazing structures in both Europe and the U.S. Kate’s tenacity amazes me, she’s never really been into formal athletics but she recently completed her first triathlon and she’s doing another one this year.

She is a great listener and does an amazing job nurturing the people in her life. I cannot wait to see her nurturing our child.

I know that given the opportunity, Kate will be a spectacular mother.

Our Family
Kate and Jess are very close to their families. Kate’s family is from Chicago - where most of her family still lives. Several years ago, Kate’s mom moved to Maine to be closer to her - so they now get to spend a lot of time together eating out and going to movies. Kate is especially close to her younger brother John - and they take a “sibling trip” every year just the two of them. Last year, John and his lovely wife Sally had a baby (Arman) - which brought unlimited joy to everyone in the family.

Jess has a big family. His mom and step-dad live just a short distance away and they enjoy cheering on the Red Sox together. Jess’ mom and Chuck are always helping their nieces and nephews throughout the summer or doing new lawn and garden projects together. Jess’ dad and step-mom Laurie also live nearby. We often spend time at their home for holidays where Jess’ half-brother Montana and half-sister Laura and his step-siblings Emma, Sam and Kyle all come together to talk soccer and catch up on home town happenings. The best thing about have a big family is that it is always a lively bunch with fun conversations about everyones lives. All the aunts and uncles are very excited to have a new little one in the family.

Our Friends
Our friends are an enormous part of our lives. We have many very close friends and we are extremely social - spending time with our friends several times a week making dinner, going for walks or just watching TV together (usually summer baseball). We choose our friends carefully and surround ourselves with funny, kind, compassionate and loving people. Many of our close friends have small children and we are lucky to be able to celebrate baseball games, birthdays and other life events with them. While we love to meet new people and make new friends - we are proud that many of our close friendships are old friends who have known us a long time - and that history has made us even closer.

Our Work
Kate is a lawyer and Jess is a business consultant We both feel very lucky that we really love our jobs and the people we work with. We have a lot of job flexibility - Kate works 4 minutes from home and Jess has an office on the second floor of the house overlooking the yard. Both of our jobs are very supportive of our adoption plan and will allow us a lot of flexibility to be home for as long as we like when a new baby arrives.

Our Play
We are both good at having fun. We are lucky to live in a beautiful location where we can see and play in the ocean. We are both physically active and enjoy running, biking and kayaking and this summer we are going to learn stand up paddleboarding (although Kate is worried about being able to stand up). Jess played competitive soccer in high school and college and his footwork is still pretty good. We love to have adventures with our friends - and will try most anything once (including skydiving and pool volleyball). Jess is a huge sports fan who loves all Boston sports (Red Sox, Bruins and the Celtics). Kate has learned to love sports and even likes going to Fenway Park for games (as long as it’s not too cold).

In the summer, we love to hang out and work in our yard - Jess loves to bbq. He has two grills and a smoker - and is famous for using them all at the same time! His bourbon bbq ribs are famous and take three days to make - and three minutes to eat. Kate prefers baking - especially anything with frosting and coconut. We love to watch movies - Kate likes foreign films and Jess likes action flicks. We both love animals but Kate especially loves giraffes and dolphins. We both love to read People Magazine and we sometimes fight to see who gets to read it first. Kate’s favorite foods are french fries and whoopie pies (a Maine specialty) while Jess loves corn chowder and cheeseburgers. There is never a lack of something to do at our house - we always have time for friends, family and a few adventures.

Our Home
We live in a small city on the coast of Maine - which has all the great features of a City while still being a very close knit small town. The neighbors on our street are all very close - many have lived there over 20 years. Big trees line our street which is quiet and wide - perfect for kickball, baseball and bike riding. In the summer - there are always children riding up and down the street playing in each others yards. All the neighbors band together to help our older neighbors shovel snow in the winter and summer bbq’s are an ongoing tradition. When the wind is right - you can sit in the backyard, smell the ocean and listen to the seagulls.

We absolutely love our home - and have spent a lot of time remodeling and decorating it so that it expresses our personalities. It is small and cozy - painted in cheerful colors with a lot of comfortable places to sit and hang out. We have a wonderful yard with a great garden and a deck in the back which we use constantly in the summer - and where Jess does all his bbq’ing.

Perhaps the most important part of our home right now is our English Bulldog - Franklin. Frank is eight years old and quite spoiled - He spends most of his time laying in the sun or sleeping. He loves to ride in the car and will eat almost any kind of fruit you can think of (especially oranges). His favorite activity is going with Jess to get his haircut - where they give him endless treats and treat him like a rock star.

Values and Parenting
While the realization that we couldn’t have a biological child was very difficult, the decision to try to adopt was easy. Early in our relationship, we discussed adoption as a wonderful option and always hoped to bring an adopted child into our family. We are surrounded by many adopted children - of all races and ethnicites. We are lucky to have many friends who have adopted and who are there to offer encouragement and advice.

Most of all - we are thrilled and excited at the possibility of being parents!

Our families instilled in us a strong sense of justice, fairness, kindness and love. We believe strongly in the importance of education - and making sure our child has absolutely every opportunity to pursue whatever dreams they can imagine.

Our goal as parents is to help our child discover their passions and their talents and help them to take advantage of every opportunity they can.

We do not have a preconceived notion of what our child should want to do or be - we hope to create an atmosphere of love and respect where our child can blossom and be happy. That means encouraging them at every opportunity but respecting their individual personalities and abilities.

Thank You!
We can’t thank you enough for taking the time to read about us. We hope we’ve given you a sense of who we are, how much we love each other and how excited we are to be parents. Please know we wish you the best of luck as you move through your adoption journey - and we wish you peace in whatever you decide.
