Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Charlie and Kathy

As we combine our thoughts to write a letter telling you our story, we realize that we cannot be more amazed of your courage and strength while making this monumental decision. We feel blessed that you’re reading our letter and hope you enjoy learning a little about us. We can’t even image what you may be going through or presume to understand your feelings and emotions however our prayers and positive thoughts are with you. We promise if chosen as your baby’s adoptive family your child will be cared for in a home filled with unconditional love and laughter, and guided through life’s road bumps with patience and perseverance. We will inspire him/her to wish, dream and reach for the stars aspiring to search for their greatest potential in life and love.

Through our lives we have experienced family with people who are not only biologically related. Our family is bigger and more powerful than genetics. We have sought out family through loved ones, friends and sometimes even mere acquaintances. Our family is a combination of parents, traditional siblings, cousins, uncles and Kathy’s grandmother. Our family also includes people who are part of our lives by choice. We are grateful to all who have and will continue to share our life experiences within our family unit.

We are Kathy & Charlie and we met on December 1, 2007 by accepting dinner invitations from complete strangers. From the moment we set eyes on each other we knew something special was about to happen. Each year we re-experience our first date by going to the same restaurant and park to look at the holiday lights and eat cheese cake. As a couple we share similar beliefs, passions, and desires, and the differences we do have serve to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We are deeply committed to one another and believe that the bond between us will serve as the foundation for a strong and loving family. Our life experiences have taught us to be more down to earth and understanding of each other and the philosophy to enjoy life to its fullest appreciating each challenge as a lesson for the future and gaining more knowledge as we move forward.

Our Story: We always knew adoption would be the way we would start our family. We are daughters, sisters, cousins, aunts and are ready to be moms. We live in south Texas in a small suburb that feels like a large community, yet close to one of the nations’ largest metropolitan cities. Our community has amazing restaurants, diverse entertainment, and an abundance of parks, children’s museums, a zoo, farmers markets and a short distance to the beach where we often go sailing with family. We can’t wait to take your baby on their first sailing trip or see a puppet show. Our neighborhood is quiet, safe and filled with families and children of all ages and a “splash pad” just waiting to be played in. Our home is full of love, laughter, warmth, friends and family. Together we enjoy a variety of activities of travel, sports, charity fundraisers, kayaking, going to the movies (action is our favorite), and spending time at home with our dogs. Our favorite yearly fundraiser is the Avon Breast Cancer Walk where Kathy spends at least 3 months fundraising and training for the walk. At the event Kathy walks the 2 day 40 mile trek and Charlie is a crew member supporting all the walkers along the route. It is one of the most incredible experiences we endure and we are so grateful we have had the opportunity to participate in an event that helps thousands of women and men in our community. We often have family gatherings for the holidays and summer Texas barbeques. Most importantly we sit down for dinner together every night and discuss our day or develop plans for the future. However, Sunday mornings are our favorite as blueberry pancakes and jazz music in the background starts our week out with good quality time together.

Our Careers: Kathy has worked with people who have disabilities for over twenty-five years. Over the past four years she has taught in a classroom for students who have severe/profound autism. This school year she is opening a new high school as the Special Education Department Head. Charlie has worked as a peace officer and in the security industry for over 15 years. She is certified in multiple disciplines that serve people helping to provide a safe and secure environment for the public.

Kathy Loves Charlie: I feel in love with Charlie for many reasons especially her sense of humor, the sense of security she provides and her perseverance to always do and achieve more. I also love how she makes me feel like the most important person in the world. She is not afraid to express her vulnerabilities and to me she is one of the bravest people I have ever known. Charlie endured many physical obstacles from birth and grew up with the guidance of her grandparents. In her young life she grew to appreciate the importance of family. She loves to make people laugh, and is very athletic riding her bicycle and often working out at the gym. As a child Charlie dreamed of being a veterinarian and though her life turned out differently she definitely has a huge soft spot for animals. More than once she has stopped afternoon traffic to rescue a turtle walking down a busy highway. Charlie enjoys being around water and water sports especially kayaking and sailing. Charlie is very diverse in her skills and along with her peace officer certification; she is also a certified personal trainer, sports nutritionist and a certified insurance adjustor. Charlie is very caring, loving and protective showing these attributes in small daily gestures and often large symbols of her love. She is so ready to share that love and caring nature with a baby in our family. She is going to be an awesome mommy, the one who sits on the floor and plays games, playing ball in the back yard or decides to make an ice cream run for a special outing in the evening. The avid reader that she is Charlie will be the first to pick up a book and start reading it to your baby. I foresee many bedtime stories ahead.

Charlie Loves Kathy: When I met Kathy over three years ago, I had been single for a long time and was not looking to fall in love. The first time I saw her I knew I was not going to be single anymore. Kathy is a one of a kind person. I have never met anyone that puts so much into helping others from working with children with disabilities to finishing a 40 mile walk for breast cancer. The first year she participated in the Avon Breast Cancer walk she had blisters on her feet that were so bad the doctors wanted her to drop out of the walk. Next thing I knew she was back on the trail and walking to the finish. She puts her heart and soul into everything from working with her students, talking with their parents well into the night or spending extra hours on the weekend helping families in need. She holds a master’s degree in special education and continues to expand her education through seminars and conferences. Kathy is out going and loves to go kayaking and travel to visit friends. She is an incredible cook and Mexican Casserole is her specialty. She also gets me involved in crazy house projects like building a patio in one weekend that actually took two extra days and lot of stone. But she loves that patio and it is her space to relax and enjoy being outdoors. She will make a great mom and I know she can’t wait to teach your baby how to do everything from counting on their fingers and toes to helping finish those complicated math problems later on in life. Kathy loves her family and they are a big part of her life. Kathy is one of the bravest people I know from the challenges she takes on, to stepping out and helping others. She is able to accomplish things I could not even think about helping others complete.

Family: Our family recently celebrated our great niece’s baptism and recognized five generations of women with our 99-year-old grandmother starting the whole scenario. Immediate family members live within the same town, surrounding towns and a few hours’ drive from each other. We also have wonderful friends throughout the United States and Canada who we consider family and often meet up with for short visits and extended vacations. Our family is very excited about our adoption plans especially our niece who is excited about having a cousin who will be close to the same age as her daughter knowing they will spend many hours playing and growing up together.

Our Promise to You: Your child will know from day one where they came from. They will know that your love was so deep you gave them a life that will be cherished and celebrated for eternity. We promise to learn from our mistakes and teach your child well. We promise to tell him/her that we love them every day and hold them tight in our arms never wanting to let go. We promise to guide and encourage them to grow into a strong, successful, diverse, polite and caring young adult. We promise to always be there for your child and be the best that we can be. We promise to give your child the freedom to be who they want to be and the courage for him/her to stand proud of their accomplishments. We promise to love your child unconditionally.

Thank you so much for reading our story and taking the time to learn a little about us. We hope that what we have written helps you with your adoption plan and that we get the opportunity to meet you soon. We wish you all the best and hope that you find peace in the decision you make.

Best Wishes
Kathy & Charlie
