Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Mike and Carrie

Dear Birth Mother,
We are excited to introduce ourselves to you and are grateful for your consideration as adoptive parents. We fully realize how important this decision is for you and truly admire your bravery. We want you to know that we appreciate the incredible gift you are giving and our hearts are with you as you make this important decision.

We are excited to start a family and be able to provide the child with a loving, supportive and happy home. Having a child has long been a dream of ours but unfortunately, we were not able to have a child of our own. For us, adoption gives us the chance to make this dream come true! We can’t thank you enough for taking the time to read this letter and hope that it allows you to get to know us better.

Our Story
Our story began about five years ago when we met at a friend’s New Years Eve party. We immediately began dating and the rest is history! We were both born and raised in sunny California- Michael in Huntington Beach and Carrie in Fresno. Michael came to the Bay Area for college and loved it so much that he stayed on to develop a career in Corporate Finance and currently works for a high-tech company in San Francisco. Carrie chose to live in San Francisco after spending ten years in New York City. Upon returning to California, Carrie opened an antiques boutique and then her own interior design studio in Marin County, and is now part of a design firm with two partners in San Francisco. After dating for several years, we tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony set in one of our favorite summer places- the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. From the very beginning of our relationship we knew we wanted a family together and know that we are now ready and in an excellent position to begin that journey.

Things We Love
Since we were in our late 30’s/early 40’s when we started dating, we knew what we were looking for in a mate and feel that our compatibility as partners was well worth waiting for! We are best friends and truly enjoy spending time together. We are both sensible people and share a well-rounded view of things. We are fortunate to enjoy a lot of the same activities and share many of the same interests. We happen to agree on most important issues; where we are different it is just additive and a good thing. We can often be found doing yoga, hiking the hills of Marin or Idaho, or skiing down the slopes of Tahoe together. We are both passionate about lifelong learning and reading. Last year Carrie took a semester of Geology classes at a nearby community college and Michael just tackled Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina” (took several weeks but was worth it!). We sometimes like to take a thermos of hot tea, some good reading material and our darling pug, Elle, to a favorite spot near a scenic Marin lake to read and take in the surroundings. We look forward to someday doing these things with our little one!

We are also very fond of traveling and have had the good fortune to be able to see many places together and separately. Carrie has traveled throughout Europe and believes that seeing the splendor of such beautiful places as Paris and Rome inspired her to become an interior designer. Michael has explored Southeast Asia extensively and loved the cultures of Burma and Vietnam. Last year we traveled to India to celebrate Michael’s brother’s marriage to a wonderful Indian woman and just recently spent two weeks exploring Argentina together. The tango we saw in Buenos Aires was amazing! And, seeing the tallest mountain in the Americas- Mt. Aconcagua- was awe inspiring. We value the perspective and inspiration that comes with seeing other cultures and lifestyles and look forward to sharing this with our child.

Michael (by Carrie)
Michael is a most caring, sensitive and intelligent man. I always say that he is almost old fashioned in his ways- meaning that his integrity and moral compass are almost reminiscent of an earlier era or generation. He has the most solid of personalities, one who doesn’t vacillate in his beliefs but knows who is he and is comfortable in his skin. He is so well liked by all of my friends and family- my girlfriends often tell me to invite him to join us on girl’s night out, they enjoy his company so…now that is a compliment! His calm demeanor is a good balance to my energetic personality, yet we are also alike in many ways, which gives us our excellent compatibility. I love that he’s a “guys-guy” but also practices yoga and has even started a daily mediation practice. He recently taught himself to play the guitar and looks forward to playing it for his child. He is dedicated to his job but also doesn’t let his work entirely define him. He leaves his work at the office is totally present when at home. I have always admired his affect on children- he just loves being around kids, and they simply adore him. When we were in India, crowds of young school children would gather around him and practically mob him and he would be smiling from ear to ear with delight! I know he is going to be an amazing father to our child.

Carrie (by Michael)
Carrie is a wonderful woman. She is very intelligent and has a very active curiosity. She is continually interested in learning and growing and never stops being a student of life. I think she inherited her father’s curiosity and interest in the world around her. She has always followed her passions throughout life. As an example, she recently took a geology class at our local community college. I’m particularly happy that she has started becoming interested in sports; recently she told me that she wanted to watch the Lakers (my team) on TV! She is also very active physically. She has been practicing yoga for almost 20 years and I know she will keep it up for the next 40. She values her good friends and family so much and knows life is only great when shared with loved ones. It is great to see how much she cares for my family. In fact, Carrie and my mom are genuine friends who thoroughly enjoy spending time together. She is also very kind, compassionate and always expresses concern for others. I can’t imagine anyone more ready for motherhood than Carrie.

Our Home and Neighborhood
Our house was built in the 1920’s and retains its vintage charm, but has been renovated throughout. We have a separate cottage on the property that currently functions as a guest room/office but will be the perfect play area for our child in the future. Our backyard is a wonderful place to entertain friends and family. We have three huge redwood trees that make for a park-like setting and in the summer months we make good use of it by hosting big BBQ’s. We love our cozy home and it’s fortunately located within one of the top public school systems in the state (we know how important a good education is today and we will certainly provide that for our child!). Our neighborhood is very quiet and family oriented where strollers and pets are common and there is a great playground one block away. We are a few minute’s walk or bike ride into our quaint town for a visit to the library, coffee shop or eatery. Nature hikes and beach combing are only a short drive away and we make good use of the incredibly beautiful area that we are so blessed to live in.

Family
Michael’s mom and dad have been married for over 40 years and are still very much in love. They live in Huntington Beach in the same house that Michael and his brothers grew up in. His mother is British but spent her childhood in India before moving to England when she was eighteen. She is an interesting and delightful person, very caring and kind, and loves to cook. She has taught us some of her secrets for preparing Indian food and now we cook our own tasty Indian meals at home. She is very excited about becoming a grandmother. Michael’s father is from a small farming town in Nebraska and has that certain charm that only the Midwest produces. He’s quick with the jokes and is always talking sports. He is a great skier and plays a lot of tennis (Michael hates to admit it but he still can’t beat his dad at tennis!). Michael is very close with his two brothers, Paul and Phil, and they are both great guys. Paul and his wife have a darling two year-old son named Luke. We love to spend time together and shower little Luke with hugs and kisses!

Carrie’s mom lives in the Bay Area and is close by for visits. She is thoroughly excited to be a grandmother and can’t wait to shower our child with love. She is a very compassionate and giving person and with an upbeat personality. She enjoys spending time with her many friends exploring the Bay Area and volunteering her time for different causes. Carrie’s father lives in Fresno and has owned an upholstery business for 40 years. He is retiring soon and hopes to be over at our place a lot in the near future. He is an out-going, active person who enjoys all sorts of outdoor sports and is an excellent fly fisherman. He can’t wait to take his grandchild to the Sierra’s on camping trips and nature hikes! Carrie has one younger brother, Brian, who lives in San Diego and can’t wait to be an Uncle. He is a computer programmer and has recently built and moved into a new house and couldn’t be happier about his new digs. Our families have been spending most holidays together and it’s always such fun. We often joke how our families are “cut of the same cloth” and delight in the fact that everyone gets along so well together.

Our beloved two year old Pug, Elle, is a big part of our lives and provides us with so much love and laughter…she is always doing something silly or adorable! She loves being around children and we often take her to the playground to give her some time with her favorite playmates.

A couple of years ago a very dear friend of ours passed away from cancer and appointed Carrie godmother of her beautiful daughter, Olive. We are very close with Olive and we have her over a couple times a month for sleepovers. She is so dear to us and is a very bright, sweet little girl. She is six years old now and such a talented artist- she loves to paint and draw beautiful pictures. Olive can’t wait to meet the new addition to our family!

Thank you
Carrie is going to be a full time mom to our child and is thrilled to be able to devote herself entirely to her most important career yet- being a mother. We can’t wait to be parents through open adoption and give our child everything that we have been blessed with. We hope this has provided you with some insight into who we are and the life we will provide for our child. Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you have any questions at all, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Carrie & Michael
