Choose A Family : Parent Profile
Ryan and Nancy
Hello!
We are Ryan and Nancy from Sacramento, California.
We thank you for gathering the strength, love, and care to consider open adoption. We know you love your baby, and if we are privileged to become his or her parents we assure you that your child will always know your love. We are very excited about expanding our family. We believe it is all of our best interest to build an open and honest relationship together. Let us start by telling you about who we are.
We met when we were students in the 7th grade. On our first date we went to our junior prom. We fell in love, and we were married in 2003 and had a kid-friendly wedding. We are both attorneys and have the time, patience, and financial resources to make sure our child can receive a good education.
We spent the first few years of our marriage in the San Francisco Bay Area while Nancy finished law school and Ryan started his job with the California Department of Justice, for whom he still works, just in a different city. Then, we lived in Los Angeles for a couple years, which we very much enjoyed, but we want our child to be raised near his or her grandparents. So, we moved "home" to Sacramento. Between our flexible work schedules (Nancy is part time) and four infant care trained and CPR certified grandparents, you can rest assured your baby will always feel safe and secure and will not be outside of a family member's care ever before preschool. Family, happiness, kindness, compassion, and well-being are very important to us and we set our lives up so we can provide and teach them to our child.
We like to travel, take long walks, and spend time with animals. We frequently try to combine these interests. We swam with dolphins on a recent vacation and went horseback riding when we went to Mexico. We look forward to exploring the world with our child and including him or her in many fun activities. One of our goals is to spend a month in Paris with our child when he or she is old enough to learn a little French. On Friday nights we love to curl up on the couch with our lovely rescue cat, Elphaba, and watch a movie or TV. Most Sunday nights we have dinner with our parents, and often talk about the day we can add a high chair around their dining room table.
We know you are making a very tough choice right now, and we wish you the best.
Ryan & Nancy

Nancy on Ryan
Ryan is smart, funny, charming, and kind. I’ve never met anyone who values family as much as he does. I feel very safe in this world knowing he is there for me. Ryan has always wanted children. He truly shines when he is with them and takes a genuine interest in what they have to say. He can be silly and fun, but will take our child’s hopes, fears, and dreams seriously. One of my favorite things to do with Ryan is go to Disneyland. Ryan loves to make our friends’ kids special mix CDs of music from the theme park to make their drive to the park more exciting. He can’t wait to share It’s a Small World, The Haunted Mansion, and The Mad Hatter’s Tea Cup ride with our child. Our child will be extremely lucky to grow up with Ryan as a father.
Ryan on Nancy
Nancy is thoughtful and considerate of others, often recognizing when someone could use a smile or kind word. She is always there when her family or friends are in need. She makes wonderful birthday cakes to order for friends and family. Every year Nancy puts together fantastic Easter baskets for our family, paying special care to little details that personalize them for each person. She is looking forward to helping our child learn to read and to writing stories for our child. Nancy has always wanted to and believed she would adopt. Even when we were teenagers, she talked about wanting to adopt a child. I know Nancy is going to love our child with all her heart and do everything she can to help our child achieve his or her dreams.

Our Home
We live in Sacramento, the capital of California and “the most diverse city in America.” Our neighborhood is one of the safest in the city, and our street has experienced a bit of a baby boom in the past couple of years. We are excited about sharing with our child all the fun things that we did growing up: spending mornings at the zoo and afternoons at Fairytale Town, and taking day trips to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe (which are both less than 2 hours away). Our house was Nancy's "dream house," when she was a little girl. The houses on our street were built when she was 8, and she wanted one! Dreams can, in fact, come true.
Our Family
Both sets of our parents and Ryan’s brother live within a five-minute drive of our home and often spend holidays and special occasions together. Ryan’s parents cannot wait to take our child -- their first grandchild! -- camping and on hikes with their sweet cocker spaniel, Abbie. Nancy’s parents are eager to take our child to the playground that is next to their house and to introduce him or her to their 4 cats and occasional foster cats. Nancy’s sister lives in San Diego. She is pregnant and due in July 2011, and Nancy and her sister are excited about watching their little ones grow up together. Ryan has family in Nantucket, Boston, and Vermont, so our child will make many fun trips to the East Coast. Everyone is really excited to welcome our child and form his or her own special relationship with our new addition.

Here is What Others Have to Say
“Nancy always seems to be aware of how children are relating to any situation. She had lunch with a group of my friends one day. One of the ladies brought along her 9-year-old granddaughter. Kara was bored. Nancy said she wanted to run to the bookstore and asked Kara if she wanted to keep her company. They were gone for about 1/2 an hour and came back with a book Kara liked in one of the store’s canvas book bags. My friend said the time with Nancy made her weekend.” - Lorri, Nancy’s mom
“My three children have been the benefit of their love and adoration of children. Thoughtful cards, adventures that have made them feel extremely special and genuine praise hold very special space in my children’s heart for them both. I will be bold to say that any child that comes into their lives will be the luckiest; because of the incredible people Nancy and Ryan are and their loving and supportive extended family!” - Sarah, Ryan’s cousin
“My sister and Ryan are rock solid. They have been together since high school. They know one another incredibly well and have a loving and supportive relationship. They are each other’s best friend. I can say, without a doubt, that their kids will never have to worry they will break up.” - Lesley, Nancy’s sister
“Nancy and Ryan are those people that you can turn to for advice, to talk through the big life events. They are grounded, solid and loyal. They have good moral compasses and warm, big hearts. And as an added bonus, they are two of the most intelligent people you will ever meet.” - Lindsay, friend of ours for 23 years
“I met Nancy and Ryan during the Summer of 2007 when Nancy was assigned to be my mentor while I was a summer associate at a law firm in Los Angeles. I was new to the area and did not know the city at all. Not only did Nancy make me feel welcome and comfortable by sending me flowers welcoming me to the office and ordering me a box of cupcakes to pass out to the other firm associates as a way of introducing myself on my first day at work, but Nancy and Ryan also took me and my visiting brother on a tour of LA. I know that Nancy and Ryan will make wonderful parents, not only because they are smart and capable people, but because they are also deeply caring, empathetic, and big-hearted. I look forward to the day when Nancy and Ryan are regarded as the coolest parents on the block, just as Nancy was regarded as the coolest mentor at the law firm!” - Zulaikha, Nancy's former mentee
“Need to pull an all-nighter writing a paper? Ryan would be the first to offer to walk me down the street at 2 am to get a caffeinated beverage. When I was feeling stressed out, spending a few minutes with Ryan usually helped me sort things out and feel better. After graduating law school, he earned a great job, advanced quickly, and is trusted with very important tasks. So if Ryan and Nancy say they want to be parents, you can bet they're going to be very, very good at it.” - Ryan W., Ryan’s college roommate
