Tyson and Kayla

Dear Birth Mother,
We are very excited to be starting this journey and are eager to share the love we have for each other with a child. Thanks for taking the time to read about us; we hope you will get a feel for who we are, the love we have to give, and the parents we can't wait to be. We truly respect your courage and strength in considering adoption and understand that whatever decision you make is out of love for your child. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tyson & Kayla

Our Story:
We met back in 2003 during our freshman year of high school while we were both in marching band. We started dating the next year when we were 15 and quickly became best friends. We spent almost every day and waking moment together! We made the relationship “official” just before our senior year, and we've been together ever since. After we graduated, we both ended up going to California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. We kept growing closer and our relationship grew stronger, so we decided it was time for us to get married after our second year of college. After graduating in 2010, Tyson joined the Navy as an officer in the Civil Engineer Corps, which led us to our first duty station here in Washington. We have now been married for three years, and we're very excited to take the next step and become parents.

What Adoption Means to Us:
We believe adoption is a beautiful, selfless act that is full of incredible amounts of love, strength, and courage. Tyson's dad was adopted when he was a child, and Kayla's cousins have also adopted. When Kayla was 16 she found out she would not be able to get pregnant, and while it was sad news, we are delighted to be able to build our family and share our love with a child through adoption. It is such an amazing picture of God's heart and love for us.

About Each Other:
   What Tyson says about Kayla...
I love the fact that Kayla is supportive of everything I do. We make a great team, and no matter what, I know I can count on her. I also really appreciate Kayla's good cooking, because I definitely like to eat! She's the creative type, and comes up with ideas for decorating wherever we are to make it more like home. Kayla likes to knit/crochet, dance, listen to music, and drink good coffee. She also really enjoys playing cards and board games. She is always caring, sympathetic, and invests in everyone's well-being. Kayla is planning to stay at home with our children and is very excited and thankful for the ability to do so. Growing up, she took care of her brothers while her mom was away, so I know she'll be great caring for our kids. She's always smiling when children are around, so I know how happy she'll be as a mother.

   What Kayla says about Tyson...
I really admire Tyson's strength, and I am so proud of him and what he's accomplished. I am really honored to be his wife and to be able to spend my life alongside him. Tyson is so supportive and caring and an excellent provider. Family is very important to him and a major priority in his life. Tyson is going to make such a wonderful dad. He's very good with his nephew, and I get so excited to think about him with our children. Honestly, he's just a big kid a lot of the time. I love that he is so silly and always reminds me to have fun and not take things too seriously. He likes to play video games and has even pulled me into a couple. He is incredibly smart and very good with computers. He even built his own! He enjoys being outside, hiking or riding his bike, and really loves motorcycles. I consider myself very lucky to have such an amazing husband, and I thank God for him every day.

Family:
Although we grew up in the same city in California, our families couldn't be more different. Kayla's family is a large, boisterous group, and most of them live within a couple hours of each other. She grew up with her mom, two younger brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and countless cousins. Tyson, on the other hand, grew up in a small, more easy-going family, with just his parents, brother and sister. Each year they would make a trip out to Iowa to visit everyone else, though.

Kayla's family gets together frequently because everyone lives so close to each other. On Christmas Eve every year, the whole family heads over to her grandparents' house for a really nice dinner. It's a tradition to always have crab legs and use the nice china. After dinner we gather around the tree while her grandpa dresses up as Santa and hands out the presents. For Easter, Kayla's family has a big reunion where over 60 people come to her grandparents' house for brunch and an Easter egg hunt. Her mom always makes cannoli, a traditional Italian dessert. It was great fun growing up with so many relatives!

Tyson's family, while much smaller than Kayla's, is very close. Every Sunday we all head over to his parents' house after church for lunch. It is a wonderful time for all of us to reconnect and spend some quality time together. Everyone also gathers at his parents' house for special times on holidays. On Christmas, after we have lunch, we gather around the tree and open presents one at a time, youngest to oldest.

One thing is the same between our two very different families, though. They're always there to love and support us through any situation. Everyone is super excited about welcoming a new child into the family and very happy about adoption. Even when we're separated by distance we stay close by keeping in contact (skype helps!), and we make it a point to visit as much as we can.

Our Fuzzy Buddy:
We have already been blessed by adoption through our dog, Puka. He found us through a shelter here in Washington and has brought so much joy to our lives. He is a one year old lab mix who loves to play and is such a sweet boy. He is the perfect height to come put his head in your lap wherever you're sitting to get a lot of pets! His favorite things are fetching his ball, playing tug-of-war with his stuffed lobster, and swimming. He keeps us active by walking him every day and taking him to new places like dog parks and beaches. He loves kids, too. He is going to be an awesome family dog!

Home Sweet Home:
Being a Navy family means we won't stay in one house for very long. Even though the physical location and building may change, we make our home wherever we are. After all, home is where the heart is. We strive to make our home a place of rest, always full of peace, love, and support. We currently live in a small Navy town in Northwest Washington, and decided to live on base in military housing because of the strong community. We are surrounded by families, and there are many children that live in our neighborhood. There is even a really cool playground right across the street! Every month there are many activities for families to do together, such as BBQs, craft times, and movie nights. The Navy really values family, so wherever we go we will have great opportunities for fun things to do together.

Our Adventures:
We love to travel and explore new places. Last summer after our college graduation, we spent some time in Hawaii, one of our favorite places (even though we've only been there less than a handful of times – we're crossing our fingers that the Navy sends us to live there one day). Then we drove from California to Iowa, flew back, and then drove from California to Rhode Island! Tyson's family took many road trips when he was younger, and it's still a lot of fun to see so many different parts of the country. We are also looking forward to a cruise to the Caribbean with Kayla's family for her grandparents' 50th anniversary.

When we're not taking these long trips, we love going to parks and taking the time to enjoy the outdoors, whether it be at a beach, down in the desert, or up in the mountains. We are very excited about having some awesome adventures with our little one and building new memories as a family.

Conclusion:
We're very grateful you took the time to get to know us a little. We're ecstatic about becoming parents! If chosen, we promise to raise your child in a safe, stable home full of unconditional love and support where his or her story of adoption is greatly treasured. He or she will definitely know of your love and strength. We will strive to give your child every opportunity and will do whatever we can to help them succeed. We are really looking forward to the joy of becoming a family.
