Hello! We are Colleen, Stephanie and our daughter Riley!

First, we simply want to say thank you for considering us. We cannot begin to understand what you are going through. You are so brave for considering open adoption and we know that you love your child very much. We hope that this letter gives you some insight into our lives and gives you a feel for who we are.

We adopted Riley through open adoption in December 2012 and it was one of the happiest days of our lives. It is amazing how much someone so small can turn your life upside down and fill it full of wonder and joy! It feels like we spent the first two weeks just staring at her, the next thing you know, we can hardly believe she is almost 3 years old. We have enjoyed every stage of her development and love being Mommies. We want to experience that joy again with another child and also want Riley to have a sibling to grow up with and share her life. We would like to share our joy & love with another child and we are confident we can provide a loving, caring and joyful home.

About Us: We met through mutual friends in December 1999 and fell head over heels for each other. We realized that we had so much in common, not just in terms of our interests and activities, but also in the way we looked at life. We both believe in honesty and integrity, hard work and most of all just being a considerate and kind person to others. After almost six years together, we were overjoyed to celebrate our commitment to each other at a beautiful ceremony with our family and friends. We have now been together for 15 years and have intertwined our families, friends, business interests and lives and look forward to growing our family. We look forward to what the future holds.

We are so lucky that we have the time and flexibility to play at the local parks, volunteer at school and participate in our children’s afterschool activities. We can’t wait to teach our children about our interests and watch them develop their own. We look forward to sharing their first steps, first game and first recital with you. We hope to have the chance to talk to you so that we can learn more about you, and you can get to know us as well.

About Stephanie

About Stephanie, By Colleen: Stephanie is one of the nicest people I know. She goes out of her way to be polite and conscientious to others. Part of her career is planning, developing and managing affordable housing and she takes great pride in the fact that this helps veterans, victims of domestic violence, single mothers and simply folks who need a safe, attractive, affordable place to call home that they can be proud of. She works hard to make sure these are nice apartments that have special features that most affordable housing does not have. She really wants to make a positive impact in her community.

Stephanie loves to have fun. She will talk to anyone anytime, which is something that I am a bit shy about doing, so I am always impressed by this quality. She is very open, which draws people to her and allows her to make quick friends. She loves dancing and almost any type of music. I like to tease her that once she gets a microphone in her hand, you would have to fight her to get it. You know the type that would jump on stage and sing with the band?…that is Stephanie!

Of course I have to add that seeing Stephanie as a mother to Riley is truly a joy! She is the “Fix It Mommy” and if anything breaks or doesn’t work right, Riley runs to Steph to have her make it all better. I love those moments when Riley does something really cute and Steph and I look at each other with a smile. We don’t have to say anything, but just know that we are both thinking about.how lucky we are!

Stephanie’s Career: Stephanie is a civil engineer with her own design firm and also develops affordable housing. She enjoys owning her own business and controlling her own schedule so that she has flexibility to spend time during the week with our family. She looks forward to afternoons teaching our child how to ride a bike and draw pictures for the refrigerator and of course building and fixing things!

Meet Colleen

About Colleen, By Stephanie: Goodness, where do I start? How can I describe the person that makes my heart beat faster and takes my breath away? How do I describe on one page the person that has made the past 15 years the best years of my life? Maybe the best place to start is with our first dance in December 1999. It was “Dancing Queen”, and there were lots of spins and smiles. Yes, that’s the first thing that attracted me to Colleen…She can DANCE!

Colleen and I met many years before our first dance through mutual friends. So, I knew she was extremely smart and popular, and I was a little intimidated by her at first. But I couldn’t resist those beautiful blue eyes and her big smile. After all these years, we always have something interesting to talk about and simply love being together. She is still, and always will be, my perfect girl.

Colleen definitely enjoys her family time with Riley and I, and we are without a doubt her priority. She also enjoys her work…and she is very good at it.

With Riley, Colleen is the right balance of loving mom, protector, and disciplinarian. Colleen is the youngest of 5 kids, all older brothers, and has many nieces and nephews. Seeing her with them and our friend’s kids, it was obvious that she has a nurturing and gentle way about her. She always has a plan for our weekends and holidays either at the park, the beach, a kid’s museum, or family outing.

Colleen’s Career: Colleen is an attorney with her own law firm and lobbies for businesses and non-profits. When we decided to grow our family, she hired new staff so that she has additional time to spend with our family. Her office is actually in our home and looks forward to walking our children to the elementary school in our neighborhood in the mornings and being there when they get home for snacks and homework.

Our Home Is Full of Love and Laughter

Meet Our Daughter, Riley: We had one of the happiest days of our lives when Riley was born. Riley is a charming, compassionate and a smart little girl who amazes us every day with the things she says and understands. She loves dancing, singing and playing with our two dogs, Skipper and Sailor. She tries to “put them to bed” and covers them with blankets like they are her babies. She enjoys being outside and going to the various parks in and around our neighborhood where she explores every nook and cranny to find bugs, collect leaves, play chase and is sure to climb on every piece of the playground equipment. Of course, she has also declared that pink is her favorite color and loves wearing her Snow White dress and fancy shoes around the house. Both of us serve as Prince Charming for her from time to time. We look forward to seeing Riley be a big sister and know that she will be loving and kind.

We also have two Labrador Retrievers, Skipper and Sailor: They are part of our family and travel with us to the beach, where they love to play in the water or ride on the boat. Riley likes to play with them and they are both great with her. Sailor gets very upset if Riley cries at all and paces around until she stops. They make us feel safe and we love them.

Home Sweet Home: We live in a charming home in Raleigh, NC, that has plenty of space but still has that warm, cozy feeling. It is the perfect size and location for our growing family with a play area and rooms for both kids upstairs and a kitchen where we can sit together while making dinner or cookies. We have a fenced front-yard where we play with the dogs. We can all sit on the porch together, greet the neighbors and their kids as they walk by! We live on a friendly street that is within walking distance to children’s parks, an elementary school, the grocery store, restaurants and several ice cream shops. We are close to NC State and can’t wait to walk or ride bikes with our children to get ice cream or stop at the playground across the street or visit Pullen Park for train, carousel and paddle-boat rides!

Our Family, Interests and Closing Thoughts

Our Family: We share 21 nieces and nephews ranging from 3 months to 30 years old, most of whom are close by in North Carolina. We are lucky to have many built-in babysitters and playmates for Riley and our future child to learn from and enjoy. Both of our families are familiar with adoption and know first-hand the joy adoption can bring to the entire family.

All of the aunts, uncles and cousins are very excited to welcome our new addition home and plan family get togethers. Colleen’s parents (Grandma and Grandpa) live only 45 minutes away and are looking forward to visits to the neighborhood pool with all of the grandkids. Stephanie’s parents (Nana and Papa) live at the beach and are excited to have the grandkids over to visit and plan the next trip to Disney World.

Adoption In Our Lives: When Stephanie was 12 years old, she was adopted by her step-father and is excited to share her experience with Riley and our next child. Two of Colleen’s brothers have had the wonderful experience of adopting children, and our family would be incomplete without Alex, Noel and Christina.

Our Interests: We spend much of our free time at our beach place, where we enjoy boating, taking walks on the beach and simply being in the outdoors. We are excited to teach our children to fish, swim and kayak on family outings and believe these activities are so healthy for kids.

We both love music, after all it’s what brought us together in the first place. Everything from Blues and Reggae to Classic Rock and Country are on our iPod and in our Pandora playlist. Although nowadays, it’s mostly nursery rhymes that we catch ourselves singing, even when Riley is not around. We often have music playing throughout the house and hope that our future child will learn to play an instrument so that we can have our own little rock star! We go to several concerts a year and also enjoy going to NC State football games, and have many opportunities in our area to attend sporting events and cultural activities.

Our Promise: We are grateful you are considering us as parents and look forward to building a relationship with you at a pace that meets your needs. Our children will know their whole life story and understand the special person you are. We are committed to providing a loving, nurturing home where our children will grow and thrive. Thank you for reading our profile, we can’t wait to hear from you.
