Dear Birth Mother,

Thank you for looking at our profile and learning our story.  We sincerely admire your courage as you consider adoption. We are also deeply grateful for your consideration, as you search for adoptive parents, a family and a home for your child.

We believe we can give a child a life overflowing in love and opportunities, rooted in the profound love, respect and joy we have for one another.

Who We Are

We are a loving married couple, living and working in Washington, DC. We are also best friends.  We looked for each other for a long time – marrying in our 30’s – but it was worth the wait.

We both spent our 20’s focused on our professional lives, looking for a chance to help others in a truly meaningful way.  Emily worked in public affairs positions throughout the federal government for over a decade. Ian was in the Navy for 12 years, stationed around the world, and now he serves as an advisor to leaders in government and industry.  We both work close to home and plan to take significant time off from work after we adopt a baby.  Our work schedules are flexible and will allow both of us to always be available when we have a child.

While we live in Washington, DC, we also have a small home near the beach in South Carolina.  We love the beach, spending time outdoors exercising and exploring, and hosting our families and friends.  It is such a fun and magical place for children.

Our Favorite Hobbies & Things

  1. Cooking at home
  2. Exercising – Emily likes yoga, swimming and walking – Ian loves to run.
  3. Traveling – especially to the beach
  4. Reading
  5. Spending time with families and friends
  6. Visiting museums near our home in Washington
  7. Listening to music
  8. Playing board games

About Emily

I was born in South Carolina and grew up in Georgia. I have wonderful parents who are married and still live in Georgia.  My brother is married and they have a darling daughter who brings so much joy to our lives.

After graduating from college, I moved to Washington, D.C. and worked throughout the federal government.  Today I continue to work in communications and enjoy learning new things each day.

I love people and am the happiest when I am spending time with Ian, our family and our friends. I also enjoy exercising – and especially like to take walks, swim and practice yoga near our home. On the weekends, I walk to the farmers’ market near our home and pick up new ingredients so we can enjoy a good meal at home.  When I was growing up, my mom and dad always tried news recipes on the weekends.   I look forward to continuing this tradition when Ian and I have children.

Throughout my entire life, I’ve also loved listening to music – especially country music.  My other favorite hobby is reading.

About Ian

I grew up in a farming community in the far part of New York State.  I am the third of seven children in a family full of love, laughter, hard work, and lots of new nieces.  My brothers and sisters are teachers, doctors and lawyers – but I wanted adventure and joined the U.S. Navy.  I attended the U.S. Naval Academy and became a submariner and nuclear engineer. For my last job in the Navy, I was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and that was where I met Emily – an unbelievable blessing.

After my time in the Navy was complete, I joined a company of professional advisors.  In that role, I spend my days meeting with business leaders or government officials and overcoming challenges.

I like to run long distances, explore new places and read a wide variety of books.  My greatest moments are spent with Emily, going for walks, talking about our days, trying a new sport, arranging parties for our friends and families, and just spending our quiet time together.

Where We Live

We live in a safe, wonderful neighborhood in Washington, DC that is full of parks, playgrounds, museums, and other children and their families.  Our neighborhood is a wonderful place for children to grow up and learn about our country and our history.  There are good schools all around us within walking distance.  We would make sure our child goes to the best school possible near our home.

Our community is also important to us.  We stay active in our neighborhood church where we were married, always trying to grow in faith and understanding.

We also have a house near the beach in South Carolina in a wonderful and beautiful community with pools and playgrounds and all sorts of fun things for children to experience. We try to travel there regularly so we can experience the joys of both homes.

Our Dreams of Being Parents

We don’t have children and are excited to begin this journey.  We have been asked by many people what kind of parents we think we would be. Our answer is that we would focus everything we have and can do on providing our child with a happy home and the opportunity to grow up strong and successful.

We will love a child unconditionally.  To us, this means accepting them as they are, educating them well, teaching them to become the best versions of themselves, supporting them when they face challenges and always providing them with a place to call home.

After building our careers for many years, we are a financially secure couple.  We both have good jobs and will be able to provide a child with a safe and stable home. We will also provide an excellent education and encourage them to go to college.

We also know that we will have many sources of support. We will have the unending support of our parents and families in welcoming a new child.  We look forward to the vital responsibilities of parenthood, the opportunities to enrich the life of a child, to be thoughtful and generous teachers, and to spend every moment loving and supporting them.

Most importantly, we will do our best to teach them our shared values of kindness, hard work, responsibility, faith and generosity.
