Choose a Family

Hello, I’m Kathy!

Dear Birth Mother: THANK YOU for taking the time to read my profile and for considering me as an adoptive parent for your child. I have so much respect for you and the love, courage and strength it takes to consider adoption. I can’t imagine how difficult a decision this must be for you, but hope it gives you comfort to know I will love your baby with all my heart and will always do what is best for your child. I’m excited for the possibility of getting to know you and answering any questions you may have.  This is an enormous responsibility that I have been preparing for my whole life. I have always wanted to be a mom and I am so ready and excited for this dream to come true.

What Makes Me Happy: I love sunshine and anything that involves being outside – going to the beach, hiking, golfing, or just a nice long walk. I also love spending time with family and friends, reading (especially autobiographies), museums, going to concerts, plays, movies and sporting events. And, speaking of sporting events, I am such a big fan of the Minnesota Vikings that I have season tickets! Yes, that’s right – I live in California and have season tickets to a football team that plays in Minnesota (true confession: attending a Vikings game is also a great excuse to go home and see my family and childhood friends and spend quality time with them!).

A Little About Me: I grew up in a small town in Minnesota (think dirt roads and less than 500 people!) with my mom and dad, older sister and younger brother. My older sister and her husband have two teenage children, a boy and a girl, and my brother and his wife have a five-year-old daughter. They all live in Minnesota and I am lucky enough to be able to visit often (6 or more times a year). My family loves to come visit me in California – especially in the winter! My parents come to visit for a month or two every January, but they will likely extend that time once they have a new grandchild! I loved my childhood in Minnesota but was not built for the cold and wanted to experience all the opportunities that a big city has to offer. After college, I moved to Los Angeles for law school, and have been here ever since. Southern California is my happy place – I love the sunshine and being able to walk everywhere in my beach neighborhood. Sometimes when I look up and see the palm trees I still feel like I’m on vacation!

About My Work: I work as a lawyer at a technology company and my commute is a 20-minute walk along the beach. I find my job interesting and  rewarding and after  many years of hard work and dedication I am thankful to be at a point in my career where I have the flexibility to focus on my  family. My company is very family friendly and my  job affords me the financial stability and  flexibility to be a devoted single parent.

Meet my family

My family and friends are the most important things in my life. I have a huge extended family. My Dad had six kids in his family and my Mom had 11, so I have many, many aunts, uncles and cousins. We get together often, whether it be for holidays, family reunions, birthdays, weddings or just because. These gatherings are filled with food, fun, laughter and joy and I always look forward to the next one. Many of my cousins have young children or babies on the way so my future child will have plenty of playmates at our family gatherings. I am lucky to have my cousin, her husband and their three kids live close by. I love going to the kids’ plays and hockey games and never miss a family barbecue! My oldest niece and nephew like to come visit me in California for their spring break. It has been so much fun to spend quality time with them and watch them blossom into young adults. I am blessed to be a godmother to three amazing girls – my nieces, McKenzie and Meah, and my cousin’s daughter, Sarah. I have a special bond with each of them and am honored to be such an important part of their lives. My family members  are all beyond excited to meet a new baby and welcome him or her to the family.

My friends are like family. In addition to the strong support system I have with my family, I also have a close circle of friends that spans childhood, college, law school and beyond. I am so lucky to have them and don’t know what I would do without them. They really are friends who have become a part of my family. I have known most of them for over 20 years and they are an incredible support system to me. Whenever I need something I know they will be there and vice versa. Many of them have kids and I am a part of their children’s lives. They are all so excited to have a new baby around and I have their overwhelming support and encouragement on this journey.

My Family Loves Traditions! My parents, brother, sister, their families and I always spend Christmas together. After many years of me going to Minnesota, my family finally realized Southern California is a little more appealing in December, so we have started spending every other Christmas in California. Wherever we are, you can be sure there will be big smiles, lots of laughs, plenty of games, delicious food and way too many Christmas cookies! My parents have a 4th of July party at their house every year with extended family from both sides. It starts off in the morning with a golf tournament, followed by a bean bag tournament in the afternoon. We finish up with an amazing fireworks show (courtesy of my cousins), often followed by some karaoke.

My Home & Community

I live in a bright and airy home in a great neighborhood three blocks from the beach. I have many friends who live close by, including two friends within a five-minute walk (one of whom has two small children who can’t wait to meet their new “cousin”!).  There are lots of families with kids in the neighborhood, as well as great playgrounds and schools.  Main Street, with many great shops and restaurants, is just around the corner from my place. I also have a vacation home (with a pool!) in Palm Springs, just a two-hour drive from my home, that I bought not only as a getaway, but also as a vacation/gathering place for my family and friends. My  vacation   home  in Palm  Springs   is   kid approved – my  little  niece   never  wants  to   leave  once  she’s  there!

Favorite Local Destinations:

  • The pier – home to one of my favorite restaurants and summer concerts
  • The beach – beautiful at sunset
  • The Farmers Market – fresh everything

My Travels

I have been lucky enough to have traveled all over the world. My favorite travels were a group of trips done with my family – we called it our family heritage tour. Our family is Irish, German, Swedish and Norwegian and we decided to take family trips to explore each of the places we were from. It was so amazing for us to share that time together and it was so fascinating to learn more about the different places and cultures we came from. It was a very special time and I hope to take my future child on a similar journey one day.

I plan to share my passion for travel with my future child. I can’t wait to show my child the world and instill in him or her the same thirst for knowledge and appreciation of and compassion for other cultures that my travels have inspired in me. I know we will have many great adventures together.

SOME OF THE PLACES I HAVE TRAVELED: Spain, France, England, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Australia, South Africa, Zambia, Caribbean Islands, Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico, and Canada.

Closing Thoughts

My Promise to you and your child:

  • To listen, love, guide, support and always be there for them, no matter what.
  • To provide a safe, secure and stable childhood where there is lots of fun, laughter, playing, exploring and dreaming.
  • To give this child every opportunity that I can.
  • To teach them to respect others and be kind.
  • To make sure they know who they are and where they came from and how grateful I am for the opportunity to be their mom.

Thank you again for taking the time to learn about me and my family and friends, and for considering me as you choose a family for your child.  I know being a single parent will be difficult at times, but I know I am up to the challenge and promise to provide a home filled with laughter and love. I have an extremely supportive community of family and friends who are ready to help me in this journey. I am ready and waiting with open arms and an open heart to make your child’s future as bright and full of joy and endless opportunities as possible.
