We are Kim and Colin from Northern California. We can only begin to understand how overwhelming the decision is to place your child for adoption as well as trying to consider what family is going to be best for your baby. We want you to know that we have an infinite amount of love to give your child and will always provide them with a safe and secure household. Though we were not able to have our own child, we did not want to give up on our dream of becoming a family. Because some of our friends and family have been adopted, we were able to listen and learn from their stories and decided that adoption is the correct path to becoming parents.
We Promise To...
- Always love and support your child
- Teach them the importance of love and respect for people of all different backgrounds
- Celebrate different traditions and cultures
- Encourage any interest your child decides to pursue
- Teach them to have a sense of self-worth
We met in 2004 at a Miami Beach hotel where we both worked at the time. What surprised us soon after meeting was that we had several mutual friends, but somehow had never met each other before. Kim was the first to take the initiative. First asking Colin to join a group of her friends for lunch so they could size him up. After passing the test, Kim suggested we should have dinner a few days later at her favorite Vietnamese restaurant so that she could introduce Colin to the food that she grew up with. This was Colin’s first time experiencing the food of Kim’s childhood and family tradition. We immediately connected while talking about our life stories. Where we came from, where we had lived, what makes us happy. After all these years family, food, and creating memories together are things that we cherish the most.
While we both enjoy many of the same things, our personalities couldn’t be more opposite. Kim is outgoing, constantly on the move and quick to making decisions. Colin is more reserved, always relaxed and is much more analytical. Although this may seem like a recipe for disaster, for us it has been a perfect balance. We compliment each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
About Kim, By Kim
My father, Mervin, is from the United States, and my mother, Kim is from Vietnam. During the United States conflict with Vietnam my father was stationed in Saigon. One day he went to the local post office where my mother worked, met each other and the rest is history. I spent my early childhood years growing up in Saigon. At the end of the conflict we moved to the United States when I was five and put our roots down in San Francisco, California. I was also able to travel and visit other family members that lived around Europe. I had aunts and uncles in Paris and London. I have been working in the Food and Beverage industry most of my life. I love to take care of and make people happy, and what better way than with food. But that isn’t the only reason I love doing what I do. The people I work alongside, lead, inspire and grow with have provided me with some of my best and oldest friends.
I cannot wait to teach our future child a sense of identity and self-worth. These are the things that I am proudest to have found in myself at a young age and believe all children and adults should strive for in life. While it took me a while to find the right person to spend the rest of my life with and become a parent with, I have always loved children and desired to be a mom. I truly believe in the power of unconditional love and cannot wait for Colin and I to be able to share our unconditional love with our future child.
Meet Kim, By Colin
Kim is the most loving person I have ever met. She is direct and to the point. We are different in many ways, but we are able to balance each other out and are more complete because of it. She makes me a better person. It has been great to get to know and be accepted by her family. Kim is going to be a great mother. She has wanted to be a mom for many years. Her life revolves around being there for those around her and the ones she loves.
About Colin, By Colin
I grew up with a close-knit family in Cambria which is a very small town on the coast of Central California. I was my parents’ only child. Growing up I was interested in a wide variety of things. My hometown was a gateway to the outdoors which allowed my parents, Charlie and Kathy, to pass on their love of hiking and camping. I participated in soccer, baseball and basketball throughout my school days.
My parents loved to cook at home which lead to my first great passion in life. I decided to attend culinary school and pursue a career in the kitchen. Cooking allowed me to work across the country and even be able to work outside the United States. It eventually brought me to Miami Beach where I met Kim! Living in so many different places I have been able to gain an appreciation of people from all different backgrounds, this is something I want instill in our future child.
It is hard for me to put into words how happy it makes me when I think about becoming a father. Thinking back to my childhood, I realize how lucky I was to have parents that always supported and believed in me. They gave me the perfect example of how to be a great parent. Interacting with children and young adults within our families and at work, I love to try and inspire them to be adventurous.
Meet Colin, By Kim
I am so fortunate that Colin is my best friend. Colin is a kind and giving person, and lucky for me, he cooks very well. Because he is such a calm and level- headed person, I know he is going to be a great father.
My favorite meal he makes is spaghetti and meatballs. When I am stressed out or feeling overwhelmed, he has the ability to bring me back down to earth or maybe just make me laugh. He has a mellow and calming presence that is the perfect balance to my personality.
Our Family and Friends
Kim’s Family: My mother lives a short distance from us, I talk to her everyday and I see her at least once a week. My father lives in Arizona, while we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like, we talk to each other often. I also have a very large and close-knit extended family that lives within 10 miles of us that we spend the majority of our holidays with. They cannot wait to bring another member into the family.
Colin’s Family: My mom still lives where I grew up in a Cambria, California, which is only a 3 hour drive south of us. She loves where we live and comes to visit us often. My father lives in Southern California. Fortunately we are able to go down and visit him frequently. From my mother I learned how to take care of myself and to not be afraid to step out on my own. My father was a commercial fisherman and loved the outdoors; he instilled in me a sense of adventure. We have been very open to my family about wanting to become parents. They know of the struggles we went through and are overjoyed with our decision to adopt.
We live in the city of South San Francisco in a large two bedroom condominium. Our home is close to the Pacific Ocean, parks and great schools. Our community is a reflection of us, both in culture and racial diversity. It is a true melting pot. The neighborhood is filled with young families and we are close to a vibrant downtown area with a small-town feel. We love going to the local farmers market every week. Our community has an abundance of ethnic restaurants and markets allowing us to taste the foods of many different cultures. We feel this is the perfect place to raise our future child in an area with so much to offer.
Thank You for taking the time to get to know us. We hope we have the opportunity to get to know you as well.
