Choose a Family

Hello! I’m Laura from Los Angeles, California!

Dear Expectant Parent,

I feel very lucky that you are taking the time to read my letter. First of all, you are strong and amazing. Just know that. I know this because the selfless decision you are faced with is an incredibly tough one and your strength and courage in dealing with this is admirable and inspirational! I cannot even begin to imagine the emotions you must be experiencing. All I can do is tell you as much as I can about me. Putting my story in your hands is the first step to making my dream of being the amazing mother I know I can be, come true. I want to love and nurture your child and offer him or her the same gifts I was fortunate to receive: a loving and supportive family full of inspiring role models, a fun and wonderful childhood he or she will look back on fondly, great education opportunities and a rich, fulfilling life. Please know that whatever you decide, I wish you nothing but happiness in your future and I really do feel honored that you have considered finding out more about me. You rule.

Fun Stuff I Love To Do…

I LOVE TO TRAVEL. I was raised by a family who was all about vacations! And I look forward to carrying on that tradition. Whether camping in the desert, a trip to Disney with my sister and her kids or visiting Europe, I love a new adventure.

I LOVE SPORTS. I am a huge fan of watching and playing sports. I have been boxing since my early twenties and I still do it for exercise. When I moved from NY to LA I had to give up my Yankee season tickets but I still love to go to baseball games in California.

I LOVE BOARD GAMES. Growing up we had game night once a week and I think that is where my board game obsession started. From Clue to Trivial Pursuit, I’ve never met a board game I didn’t like.

OTHER THINGS I LOVE: cheese, art, harmonica (I play a little), sushi, roller coasters, theme parks, aquariums, hot dogs, BBQ, pizza, the beach, British mystery series, dance parties, mud, adventures, pirates and Christmas.

This Is Me!

You know that show “This is Us?”  Well, I love it. And it makes me cry pretty much every week. I share this because if there are two things I know a lot about it is television and feelings. I am a born nurturer and I work in the television industry. And trust me, these two things don’t always go together. Which is why much of my career and extra-curricular interests have centered around mentoring and supporting young people, particularly women, interested in the arts and creative fields.

I guess you could say I have always been a mom of sorts. In college I worked as a teaching assistant for kids with special needs to earn extra money. But my real passion was writing and film making, so I focused on those and parlayed them into an eventual career. Although my work now is mainly in the world of TV comedy (I also love making people laugh), I always find ways to use my skill set for something more, whether it is creating public service announcements (PSAs) in my free time or partnering with an inner-city high school arts program to give talented kids experience on a film set that they would not normally have access to. Helping, nurturing, mentoring…these things make me truly happy. The only other thing I love as much as that is laughing and making people laugh. My family is hilarious and so are my friends. I know the whole “laughter is the best medicine” expression is super corny, but honestly, it is true. I learned at a young age to not take myself too seriously and being able to laugh at myself is both the secret to my success and the reason I am so happy and at peace with life and myself. I have always known I wanted to be a parent, but due to severe endometriosis and some surgeries to correct it, I knew early on that I would not able to have children of my own.

I can’t wait to share and create the warm, laughter-filled environment that my parents created and to instill the same confidence, peace and joy in a child’s life.

Meet Laura

I love to make funny stuff, (and I can’t believe I get paid to do it!) I feel so lucky that I get to do what I love and get paid to do it! Working on the creative end of making TV shows is truly my dream come true. And working in this industry has also taught me a lot about life, communication and community. I am a firm believer that whatever you do, you should do 100% and work hard, but also enjoy doing it, especially if you are making a comedy. So I lead with a positive attitude and set the tone for the kind of environment we can all enjoy working in, and that is part of the reason I have been so successful. People love working with me because the process of making a show with me is as positive as the end product. And that street goes both ways. I love the people I work with and they make my life richer, funnier and frankly, easier because I work with so many smart and inspiring people who are good at their jobs. This industry has taught me that the best way to succeed is to lift everyone around you up with you, and they will lift you up too. I apply that philosophy to my life outside of work as well. I also feel lucky because being freelance will allow me to spend quality time raising a child, while also being able to financially support a great lifestyle for a family.

I Will Teach My Child:

  • Nobody is perfect, and nobody needs to be perfect.
  • Forgive and move past things for a healthier mindset.
  • Warmth, love and vulnerability are the biggest strengths a person can have.
  • If you can laugh at yourself, you win…everything.

Home Sweet Home

Best Home EVER! The beach is my backyard! The best thing about California is I can be at the beach, the desert or in the mountains in the same, short amount of time. Southern California has great beaches and I spend a lot of time riding bikes along the beach and relaxing in the sand. I also love spending time in my big backyard watching the sun set or sitting by the firepit. I am a decent cook, but my boyfriend Hunter is an amazing cook and loves cooking for me when I am busy! We share a lovely home on a tree-lined street, and he is incredibly supportive, loving and of course funny. In the future, I believe that our relationship will grow organically into a life long partnership but for right now I am focusing on becoming a parent and he is supporting me in that dream in every way possible!

Things I Look Forward To Doing With A Child In Los Angeles:

  • Playing in the backyard
  • Going to the beach
  • California Science Center (They have the shuttle Endeavor!)
  • So many playgrounds to explore
  • Railroad and Travel Town Museum
  • Christmas fireworks at the beach
  • Pumpkin Races at Halloween
  • Amusement parks
  • And of course the Aquarium and the zoo!

My Family & Friends

My family is awesome. I know I am biased, but my friends agree. My dad is hilarious and collects toy soldiers and trains and has proven to be a fantastic grandpa. My mom is smart, nurturing and also quite funny. They are both so young at heart and fun as grandparents. For the past several holidays we have all enjoyed playing the Pie Face game, where everyone ends up getting whipped cream in their face, with my sister’s family. The great thing about being in LA is that my parents both love to spend winters here in the warm weather. So my mom spends the cold months here, visiting me, and my dad visits for about a month each year. So between that and my trips to visit them in New York, there will be no shortage of grandparent, aunt, uncle and cousin time. My sister and I are already planning a trip for her family to come visit for spring break next year so we can all spend quality time at the beach. I have also built a strong community of people who are parents here in Los Angeles. They are inspiring, intelligent and funny women who have been and will be my support system and all have small children who will be great playmates!

Closing Thoughts

My promises to you and your child:

  • They will be loved, supported and nurtured unconditionally
  • To instill a sense of confidence, inner peace and self-assuredness in them
  • To give them every opportunity to reach their full potential
  • They will always be heard, respected, encouraged and inspired
  • They will always feel safe, secure and emotionally supported
  • Books, games, trips, songs, snuggles, kisses and so many I love yous
  • So much joy and laughter
  • That your child will always know how much love surrounded their adoption and the incredibly courageous and selfless decision you chose for them.

Thank you! I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to read about me. It means so much and I would love to share more. This story is about you too and I can’t wait to meet you and then together, we can begin a new chapter in our lives!
