We decided to pursue adoption when our beloved foster daughters left our home. It was a bittersweet day because we felt grief about saying goodbye, but also great hope for the next steps in our parenting journey.
We’ve been together for 8 years and have been eager to become parents our whole lives. After struggling with several pregnancy losses, we enthusiastically joined the adoption community. We were inspired on this journey by Maggi’s many adopted cousins from the Philippines, where her mom is from. We’re excited to use our parenting skills to nurture a happy, well-rounded child. As eldest siblings, foster parents, and drawing on Maggi’s work as a child psychologist, we have a strong foundation in parenting. We will raise a child who values family, respect, hard work, and care for others. This profile provides more details about us, and we hope to share more with you soon!
We met in 2015 as PhD students in Boston. Our first date was supposed to be a quick coffee, but we had so much in common that we ended up talking all afternoon. Neither of us thought we’d ever find a partner who was so “just right” for us. Our relationship is built on trust and open communication. We prioritize our quality time and we resolve disagreements immediately instead of letting them build up. Each day, we share our "roses and thorns" (the best and worst parts of our day). On Sundays, we have "affirmation conversation" - a term Jon invented - where we each give two compliments for what the other did that week. By the time we got married in 2019 we knew that our partnership would last forever. We proudly celebrated with our close knit community of family, friends, and our dog, Bonnie. Our bond has gotten even stronger since, through difficult experiences like infertility and losing loved ones.
Maggi is a warm and intelligent professor and child psychologist. She cares deeply for her family and friends and ends up as “the mom” in almost every situation. Maggi is the oldest child of an immigrant mother from the Philippines and has carried forward her family’s cultural values of generosity and hard work. As a 3rd-generation teacher, she dedicates her life to helping young people- from teaching her social work students how to help children, to directly supporting children cope with hardship. Maggi’s research focuses on culturally-responsive therapy and parenting skills for children experiencing discrimination and trauma. Her work is flexible, allowing her to be at home with her future child as much as she wants.
After years of teaching these skills and practicing them with her foster kids, Maggi is excited to use them as a lifelong mom. She looks forward to creating a loving environment for her future child - filled with her teaching life values, skills, and lots of singing and cuddling!
Jon is kind, funny, and has a calm presence. Like Maggi, he is the oldest child in his family and cherishes the many years he’s spent caring for his younger sister, niece and students. Jon grew up in a hardworking Chinese-American family that values higher education. He became a professor and an expert in public health who studies how to keep youth of color safe from violence. His favorite things at work are his partnerships with community organizations, supporting his students, and talking to the media.
Jon is passionate about his work, but he’s even more excited about becoming a dad. As a foster dad, he was always there for our girls with nurture, comfort, and support. Jon can't wait to build on this experience by playing games, cuddling, and cooking with his future child(ren). He just found the perfect e-bike for fun, quick rides around town with kids.
We live in a racially diverse neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts in a large 3- story condo we have owned since 2020. Our area has so much to do for kids and adults. We are walking distance from many playgrounds, excellent elementary schools and programs for kids like swimming, karate and summer camps. We spend lots of time outdoors running, playing tennis, or taking walks with our dog in the two beautiful parks near our home. Every fall, we take the short drive for apple picking at an orchard outside Boston.
We live in a spacious open- concept condo. We love the huge wall of windows in our home that keeps our plants happy and the outdoor garden bed where Jon grows kale, chard, tomatoes, and Chinese vegetables to cook for family dinners.
Bonnie is an 8-year-old Boxer mix. We rescued her as a puppy from rural Texas. She’s calm, well-behaved, and one of the cuddliest dogs you’ll ever meet. Her interests include sunbathing and belly rubs :)
Nothing means more to us than our family and close friends, and we are fortunate to have a large, supportive, and diverse community. Jon grew up nearby and his parents are a short drive away. Though Maggi’s family is mostly on the West Coast, we visit with them at least twice per year.
Our family and friends will support the day-to-day of parenting and our child’s specific needs. For example, when caring for our foster children, our close Black friends were an invaluable resource for the whole family, such as helping us with hair care and talking to the kids about racism.
We had the amazing experience of parenting 2 foster sisters (ages 2 and 7) this past summer. Together, we developed a positive attachment, daily routines, family rules and practiced Black hair care. We’ve been parenting foster kids needing short-term care ever since. The close bonds we’ve formed with each child has made us even more excited to become parents!
As parents, our strongest values are family, responsibility, and caring for others. We will give your child every opportunity to succeed while also teaching them to be kind and humble. Their daily lives will be filled with learning, enriching activities, and quality time with family. They will be deeply loved and they will make the world better.
We are deeply open to building a lasting relationship with you with as much contact as you want, including in-person visits. As foster parents, we love staying in touch with birth families and connect with them frequently. We would love for our child to know where they come from and have another loving adult in their life. No matter what, we will teach our child to understand and respect your desire to give them a life full of opportunity and joy.
