Hello! I am Mary Beth from Washington, DC

Dear Birth Mother: I am in awe of your courage and strength as you decide what is best for your child. You are making a difficult choice and I am honored that you are considering me as an adoptive mother for your baby. I have always known that I wanted to be a mother and absolutely adore children. I am excited to welcome a child into my life and eager to love your child with all of my heart. Thank you for considering me as a forever home to love and nurture your child. I hope we have the opportunity to get to know each other as we embark on this journey.

How My Friends Describe Me: Genuine, loyal, will be an amazing mother, reliable, kind, energetic, creative.

5 Most Memorable Vacations: Burma, Grand Canyon, Mount Everest, Egypt, Tibet.

About Me: I live in Washington, DC but I grew up in a small rural town nestled in the mountains of Virginia. I learned to love the small town values that I benefited from and will ensure that my child learns the importance of community, loyalty and friendship. I have been very fortunate to have created a community of loved ones and supporters in the city and yet still be close to my family, beloved hometown and mountains. Even though I grew up in small town rural America, I have always been drawn to causes and cultures far away. I am passionate about ensuring that opportunity is available to all and work to help those less fortunate. My work is focused on helping to end extreme poverty in developing countries. I am passionate about ensuring that justice and equality for all are respected, that our democracy is protected and believe that we all need to work to be the change that we want to see.

Motherhood and My Support Network: I have always known that I wanted to be a mother. I am a DEVOTED aunt to three nieces and a nephew that I adore. I am also the godmother to a god daughter that I cherish. I have always wanted a child of my own to love and nurture. I am blessed with a supportive family and an extended network of close friends. I have a village ready to support me and to help in any way. Your child will be SURROUNDED in love by me, my family, and friends who are like family to me. There is a ready circle of grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins eager to welcome a baby into our clan.

My Career Path, and Why I Chose It: From the time I was young, I was always told to follow my dreams wherever they lead. After reading To Kill A Mockingbird as a child, I always knew that I wanted to become a lawyer. As I got older, my interests turned more towards global affairs and I practiced international trade law for several years. Later I worked as a diplomat for the U.S. Government and lived overseas representing American interests and American citizens. Most recently, I was honored to work on international development issues for President Obama at the White House. I have been fortunate to have a successful career but now I am enjoying a much quieter and more balanced schedule as a consultant. Currently I am working to help promote the rule of law in newly established democracies. As a consultant, I am able to work on projects that matter to me and to set my own schedule, which is perfect for welcoming a new baby and devoting significant time to her or him. I currently have the flexibility to work from home and set my own hours. I am financially secure, have a stable career, and own my own home. I am ready to dedicate my love, time, and attention towards raising a happy child.

What Makes Me Happy: Going to the theater, playing trains with my nephew, reading to my nieces, backyard BBQs with friends, traveling to a new locale.

My Loving and Supportive Family

My family is loving and supportive and my parents still live in the small town that I grew up in. My parents were both teachers and are now retired. Education was always highly valued in my family and I want to ensure that my child benefits from great schools as well as exposure to music, sports, camps, outdoor recreation and other activities to allow them to discover their own special skills, passions and interests. My mom started reading to me regularly when I was just six weeks old and she attributes my love of reading and learning to this. I have no idea if that is true but it certainly did not hurt! I intend to repeat this practice and know that she is eager to start reading to another grandchild.

My Home and Closing Thoughts

The Place I Call Home: I live in Washington, DC. I love being part of a city which has so much diversity and multicultural experiences. My neighborhood is very family friendly and is surrounded by parks and playgrounds that are filled with future playmates. There are always spontaneous gatherings and laughter that we can join in. An excellent charter school and public library are located just two blocks away. DC is filled with monuments and museums and both the beach and the mountains are only a short drive away. I imagine taking my child to museums and art galleries and the zoo on a regular basis to aid any curiosity that develops as we read a new book or sing a new song.

Holiday Traditions: Christmas is a favorite holiday- I love making gingerbread houses with my nieces and helping to create the magic of Santa for my nieces and nephew. My parents’ home is always filled with holiday treats and many Christmas trees are decorated by Nana each and every year. Thanksgiving is spent at my home in Washington DC with my family and a wide array of friends gathered together for a huge feast. My mother insists on making numerous family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. And we all oblige her by eagerly eating way too much!

My Heartfelt Thank You: My curiosity about the world has led me to explore far and wide. Travel is a passion of mine. I love to see new places, learn about different cultures and try new foods. I hope to share the adventure of travel with my child and open their eyes to the wider world. I believe in being a good global citizen and want to teach my child the importance of doing our part to make our community, our country and our world a better place. Childhood is a time to explore, play and learn.  I hope to provide a home filled with love and be open to any and every curiosity. I want to ensure that my child enjoys playing outdoors and exploring the wondrous curiosities of nature. Music was a big part of my childhood- from the church choir to piano lessons to playing the flute in the marching band and bassoon in the concert band- and I want to give my son or daughter the opportunity to explore their interest in music. Sports were an important part of my childhood and I still enjoy watching sports of all kinds. I hope to introduce my child to sports and allow her or him to learn how to play a variety of sports and also learn the value of participating on a team. I have learned the value of hard work and the power of education. I want to ensure that my future child will benefit from a wide array of opportunities and diverse experiences so that he or she can discover their true interests and sense of self. Above all, this child will know they are loved and experience the joy of laughter and develop into a strong, confident person.

I have so much respect for the decision you are making to give this child a new life. I promise to love your child with all my heart and provide never ending opportunities for your child to learn and grow in a loving, safe and nurturing home. I want you to feel comfortable and supported throughout this process and for us to create a plan that we are both comfortable with. I look forward to getting to know you and wish nothing but the best for you as you make this decision.
