How to Choose the Right Adoptive Family for Your Baby

In an open adoption, birth mothers are able to select the family their baby will be placed with. Choosing the perfect adoptive family is one of the most important steps in the adoption process. Sometimes it’s as simple as a special comfort or connection felt when viewing a hopeful adoptive family’s profile that is the deciding factor. Since this isn’t always the case, here is a simple guide to help you decide what family will be the best for your baby.

Adoptive Family

Know What’s Important to You
Before you choose a family, you need to ask yourself what values and attributes are important to you. Do you want the adoptive parents to have a specific level of education? Do you want them to have other children? Do you want your child to be raised in the suburbs or would you prefer the big city? What kind of opportunities would you expect the parents to provide for your child? Setting these guidelines will help you choose the right adoptive family.

Decide On Your Level of “Openness”
Another big decision is to choose your level of “openness.” Do you only want to receive updates when milestones are achieved? Do you want to have an active relationship with your child? It’s important to pick an adoptive family that wants the same level openness as you to ensure a smooth adoption process. You will need to decide what will work best for you, the adoptive parents, and your child.

Use Your Gut
When making any important life decision, you need to make sure it feels right. If you have a gut feeling that a family may not be the right choice for your child, then take a step back and take the time you need to think about the situation and consider exploring other families. Having communication with your chosen family can help you feel more comfortable with your placement. The more you talk to the family and get to know them, the better idea you will have about what type of parents they will be.

Take Your Time When Getting to Know a Family
Take the time you need to get to know the adoptive family. Work with your caseworker to get in contact with the adoptive family to discuss what you would like to see come out of the relationship. Always be honest and upfront about your expectations. Be honest about what you’re thinking, but also be mindful of the family’s feelings.

When you are trying to find the perfect adoptive family for your child, you must be true to yourself and as realistic as possible. The adoption journey is a continuous learning process for you, the adoptive parents and your child. Do your best to research different families, so you can make the best decision for your child.
