How to Create an Adoption Support System as a Birth Mom

Support systems are formed and used in all walks of life, they are leaned on during difficult times, great times, and especially during life changes. A positive support system can play a large part in providing you with love, care, and feedback to process your thoughts and emotions throughout your adoption journey. A group of caring and supportive individuals, who will help you work through the difficult times and embrace the joy that adoption can bring, is an important part of your adoption journey and can be a wonderful addition to this time in your life. Here are some ways you can create an adoption support system you can count on:

Adoption Support System

Lean on Friends and Family
Think about who you love and who loves you the most. These are the people who are most likely to provide you with a safe space to open up about everything you are thinking and feeling when considering adoption. Consider talking about what reasons have led you to this decision, this will help them to understand why you are choosing adoption and support you in your decision.

Connect with Other Birth Moms
Remember that you are not alone and there are many other strong women who have had similar experiences. Birth mom support groups are a great way to connect with other birth moms who have been in your shoes or are also on their adoption journey. Everyone in the group understands the emotional journey of placing their child for adoption and their stories can provide strength for your current situation and hope for the future. If you aren’t yet comfortable with attending an in-person support group, there are many birth mom blogs and podcasts that can provide additional support in your adoption process.

Speak to an Adoption Professional
Sometimes you may want a professional opinion during your adoption process. A trained professional has experience working with other birth moms and can give you unbiased advice for your unique situation. At AdoptHelp, we can provide you with a certified and trustworthy professional who is knowledgeable about the adoption process. If you would like to speak with a counselor or therapist, please contact your case worker to request an appointment.

Remember to Focus on Yourself and the Baby
At the end of the day, you need to focus on yourself and what is best for your baby. It’s important to focus on what will give your baby the best life possible. Whenever you need someone to talk to, your support system will be able to give you the emotional support you need to remain positive and focused throughout the adoption process.
